  1. And what do you u use as alternative?
  2. Hi there. I'm trying to install the Cozy docker but it has no 'official' unraid template. There is some basic info on the Cozy website but i don't really know on how to proceed next. Has anyone tried running Cozy Cloud on Unraid before?
  3. This: Backing up your mobile pictures on the fly is easy. There are multiple ways to do that. But in assume you want to access all these pictures over the internet from your mobile device as well? We use a combination of nextcloud and emby. I know you said you had a bad experience with nextcloud. For me it's actually the only mobile app that works very well for auto uploading images. I have nextcloud data mapped to an UD. A script copies the new uploads (every 4 hours) to the array in the 'images' or 'video' folder. I use Emby to access them from my mobile device. Emby is not really focused on pictures but it works very well. No long loading times. That said, i too want to get rid of nextcloud and want a more user friendly and all-in-one solution. My parents use a free dropbox account to sync between mobile and unraid. A script moves (not copy) files from dropbox to unraid. Syncthing (like primeval_god mentioned) didn't work well for me outside LAN but it's a very powerfull app once you get it tweaked.
4. I feel your pain. I'm also looking for a complete self hosted photo solution and not just for storing them. I want to go a step further and also would love: - a self hosted website for viewing photo's and albums - sharing options - the option to resize images when i upload them - a compatible android app with auto upload function. Basically a self hosted google photo's -like system but with a compatible mobile app. There are enough options but i miss the mobile integration. ios/android. (don't tell me about nextcloud!) I tested photoshow, piwigo, filerun, pydio, seafile, filebrowser, minio, tonido and they all do what is promised so i can't complain but i miss that 'final thing'. I'm currently running nextcloud as our own cloud and lychee to share nostalgic pictures with friends. Don't get me wrong. I love what others coded in there spare time but i miss an all-in solution and i'm certainly willing to pay for it.
  5. I never used freenas for a long time so i cannot judge it but swapping hardware with unraid is indeed fairly easy to do. As for our usecase: Started with unraid just as a NAS 5 years ago. Then added a second UnRaid box just for backups. Now, we are slowly moving away from the NAS/data storage and use it mainly just for docker apps, VM's (win10 & pfSense) and cloud services. The reason is that we have a whooping 3.5TB of data with only 1TB that's important. So we now have 2 unraid setups which is totally overkill for our needs...
Welkom trouwens!
  7. Wow. This is exactly what i'm looking for. Clean and simple.
  8. Assuming you already have an unRaid server running you have a few options from docker: Nextcloud: i use it only because the android app has a build-in photo backup feature that works very well. But the move to 'Nextcloud Hub' is not my thing. Seafile: very good file server and felt a bit 'faster' then nextcloud in my case but no photo upload in android app. (well, the feature is there but didn't work on my Xiaomi Mi 9T) Pydio: like seafile but i haven't tested it. The new update to 'Pydio Cells' is (again) not my thing. Filebrowser: more basic but works very well. Also less hassle to setup. I like the GUI, clean and simple.
  9. I use Emby but i'm going to try Jellyfin soon. Emby has some payed features. Jellyfin is open source.
  10. My parents have an intel nuc running with unraid. No problems so far. FYI:
  11. Cloud storage is not an option? (assuming your data plan allows it) I mean, 1800 bucks gives you unlimited cloud storage for +-10 years? Without having to worry about swapping out hard drives.
  12. I have a second unraid server only to store a backup of my primary unraid server and home pc's. The automated procedure goes like this: cron: 0 2 * * * - Primary server wakes up the backup server using a scheduled script with the 'etherwake' command. - When backup server is awake it auto-mounts remote smb-shares from primary server. cron: 15 2 * * * - a simple script runs cp -Ru command for the user share. cron: 45 2 * * * - a simple script runs cp -Ru command for the media share. cron: 15 3 * * * - backup server shut down via /sbin/poweroff script. For me this works very well but i only have 4TB of data. I'm using consumer hardware and don't have IPMI. I you have more important data, and a larger array, you may want some more feedback from your backup then @Hoopster method is a good option.
  13. UPDATE: this is not going to work. The usb3.1 gen2 chip on the motherboard from asmedia does not support DP port or HDMI alt mode so ineed to find another way. Another option is to buy a Thunderbolt 3 add in card but this too is not just plug and play. The motherboard must have a TB3 header of some sort?? I found 2 add in cards for pci-e x1 slot that support DP alt mode. Delock 89582 Sunix UPD2018 This is a valid option. Now i just have to find a long cable but this seems very difficult in europe.
  14. I looked it up and your motherboard bios and cpu supports intel vt-d. You can enable it in the bios under 'Advanced' > 'CPU Configuration' > 'Intel® Virtualization Technology': In short, it means you can passthrough devices (usb controllers, gpu's, network cards, etc...) to a virtual machine you created in unraid. You will find out when you learn to know unraid . Don't bother if you don't need it.
  15. Hi there and thank you for taking the time answering my questions. Well, i have the manual on paper that came with the box and there is definitely nothing mentioned about alt mode. The downloaded version is the same with minor changes but nothing about alt mode either. Asrock could be using another another commercial name for it in the bios. I haven't rebooted my server yet to find out but the manual covers all the bios menu's. I emailed to asrock support hoping for an answer. A VM with Pop OS! distro is up and running. It runs fine without any problems. I'm going to passthrough the iGPU today. I have plenty of other gpu's (green and red) to try if the iGPU doesn't work. But i don't expect much problems here. UPDATE: iGPU didn't work but i got a nVidia GT610 in the primary pci-e slot that worked from the first time booting the vm. Thank you. I appreciate your effort but Amazon, Newegg, e-Bay, etc... are not an option as i am from Belgium . Therefore this is something i have to find out for myself. I do expect some problems and don't think this will work 'out of the box' but that's why i do it. This is how i learn to know unraid. I've purchased an unraid license only to play with I don't think there is a step-by-step guide (yet) for this. I will update this post when i made some progress (or not).
  16. It depends on what you want to do with it. Plex will run just fine unless you need to stream to a lot of devices. Does you motherboard/bios supports iommu/vt-d? If not, you won't be able to passthrough hardware to VM's (if you need any).
  17. Goal: Linux VM with single docking hub over usb-c 3.1 gen2 to hook up: mouse keyboard full HD (no 4K) monitor speakers (single jack) card reader Motherboard: asrock Z170A-X1/3. I know: the differences between usb 3.0, 3.1 gen1 (5gb/s), 3.1 gen2 (10gb/s), thunderbold 3. my motherboard does indeed have a true usb3.1 type-c gen2 chip with 10g/s speed. (NOT thunderbolt 3) i can pass through the asmedia 'asm1142' usb3.1 chip to the linux VM. USB storage works, detects sticks/drives. that the usb3.1 chip or motherboard or bios or OS or dock or cable or all of them must support 'ALT MODE' in order to carry video and sound signal and not just data. Questions before i buy: ALT MODE: I cannot find any indication the 'alternate mode' is supported by the motherboard or bios. In fact, i still don't know where to look. Is this a motherboard, chip, bios, OS, dock or cable option? Or is this part of the 'GEN2' standard functions? If i cannot get this figured out then all of the other questions don't matter. GPU PASSTHROUGH: i assume i have to pass through a gpu as well? CABLE: i can't seem to find a 10m usb-c gen2 cable. Also, almost all dock's or hub's have a fixed cable attached to the dock so i will need an extension (male-female) rather then just a long cable (male-male). OTHER: Are there other things i must look into? What i need: DOCK: currently i have my eye on this Juiced ChockDOCK v2. CABLE: haven't looked into it yet. The initial idea was to upgrade to 10gb network between the server and pc so i could have faster transfer speeds. But then i realized that i still have plenty of resources (cpu/ram/ssd) left to setup a VM and use it as a replacement for our home-pc. This way i dont have to worry about transfer speeds. Anyone who thinks this might work?
  18. That is the biggest, and also the only, reason why i wouldn't do it IF you don't have a backup router. I have an old core2duo 1u server with two onboard intel nics that i use as a pfsense backup router. When my server or array goes offline, the backup router will boot automatically. That being said, i do understand the logic in a stand alone router.
  19. I'm bumping this topic as i am looking for a similar solution. Searching the forum lead me to this topic. Is it possible to setup a VM and passthrough a TB3 card to it? Passing through a gpu and make it work with the TB3 card in order to hook up monitor using the TB3-dongle looks like a challenge.

    Multi os only

True, it is not a requirement to boot. I was wrong. I was reffering to problems with passthrough when using only 1 gpu in the primary pcie slot or something? But those are solved in one of the latest versions? Back on topic. OP, have you tried setting up your server?
  21. I totally understand. Back on topic.

    Multi os only

I think unraid needs a dedicated gpu to boot. This will most likely be the iGPU. There are ways to passthrough the iGPU but i haven't looked into it yet so i can't help you there. What hardware do you have?
  23. Intel quad nic's can be found online for cheap. But then again, that board only has a pcie 2x lane. I'm not sure it even supports vt-d so it doesn't matter. But then again: why spending $250 on hardware for a stand alone router when you can buy a cheap used dell (or other) server/tower with full speed pcie slots, 4 ram slots, vt-d/iommu support and double/tripple your sata ports. I'd vote for a used worstation with unraid and use your j4105b slap in a extra single nic and use it as a backup pfsense router in case your unraid server is down. There are negatives with this setup (like a little more power hungry) and i don't know your use-case but it seems to me your unraid server can use a modest upgrade I'm not trying to push you in this direction. I'm just thinking out loud.
