Gmail constant Authorization failed

Recommended Posts

I am using an app password and have mailserver set as smtp.gmail.com.
I've both tried with SSL(port 465) and STARTTLS(port 587).
Both give me an "Authorization failed" within 3 seconds using test.
Syslog just shows a lot of

Authorization failed (534 5.7.9 https://support.google.com/mail/?p=WebLoginRequired ________ - gsmtp)
And I've tried everything on that link and more.

I can confirm that I'm using the correct app passwords because I can see "Last used" being updated at https://myaccount.google.com/u/2/apppasswords

I honestly don't know what I could be forgetting

I've tried using "Gmail" and "Gmail with TLS" presets and also tried using custom and filling in the information from https://support.google.com/mail/?p=WebLoginRequired

Okay I managed to fix it while typing but I'm still gonna upload for anyone having the same problem.
I tried both having username set as [email protected] and myname
But apparently it has to be myname@

This wasn't previously like that and it honestly is very weird but yeah it's google

Final settings ended being up like this:

I had a problem a while back with my G-mail password and found that it was because I had generated a password (with Bitwarden) that contained symbols.  I found my problem was that Unraid was unable to pass one of those symbols to Google when logging in.  (I suspect it was one of the ones  that is reserved as a control character by the shell program.)  Obiviously, I fixed it the same way as you did by changing the password on Google to one that could be passed off by Unraid to Google.

hi,  just set it up to use Gmail as a SMTP server and enter your credentials for your Gmail account but  this will no longer work, as you now have to use App Passwords

From Google

Create & use app passwords

Important: To create an app password, you need 2-Step Verification on your Google Account.

If you use 2-Step-Verification and get a "password incorrect" error when you sign in, you can try to use an app password.

Go to your Google Account.

Select Security.

Under "Signing in to Google," select 2-Step Verification.

At the bottom of the page, select App passwords.

Enter a name that helps you remember where you’ll use the app password.

Select Generate.

To enter the app password, follow the instructions on your screen. The app password is the 16-character code that generates on your device.

Select Done.

If you’ve set up 2-Step Verification but can’t find the option to add an app password, it might be because:

Your Google Account has 2-Step Verification set up only for security keys.

You’re logged into a work, school, or another organization account.

Your Google Account has Advanced Protection.

Tip: Usually, you’ll need to enter an app password once per app or device.

Update Feb 2024: Google killed the option to use login / pass on email clients, devices etc.

Now only that "Sign in with Google", what Unraid doesnt support yet.

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229

Sign in with Google is not about this at all. It is a way to use your Google login to sign in to other websites and things.

SMTP Notifications to my gmail account using an app password is still working just fine.

They haven't allowed you to use your interactive login credentials for this purpose for a long time, so you have to use an app password. That is basically the point of this whole thread.

I can start a new thread, but starting last night at 2am, I am no longer able to receive email from my unraid server. I get this error:
Mar 12 07:39:16 haymak3runraid ool www[13892]: /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/dynamix/scripts/notify 'smtp-init'
Mar 12 07:39:18 haymak3runraid sSMTP[14113]: Creating SSL connection to host
Mar 12 07:39:18 haymak3runraid sSMTP[14113]: SSL connection using ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384
Mar 12 07:39:18 haymak3runraid sSMTP[14113]: Server didn't like our AUTH LOGIN (503 AUTH command used when not advertised)

Checking my settings, nothing has changed, and mirror's other's from here. I also changed my app password to see if maybe that expired somehow?(It shouldn't have).. But that made no difference. I can't find anything other than this:

https://support.google.com/a/answer/81126?visit_id=638458505878602168-168114250&rd=1#zippy=%2Crequirements-for-all-senders

do you all think this is related? What are we to do, to start receiving emails again from unraid. Most likely this is impacting other services too.

Sorry to bump an old post, but what does Create & use app passwords?

Will i not be able to use one of my existing gmail accounts? I need to create a gmail account using the gmail app on my phone, and use the default password that the app will generate? Is that what it is?

Thanks for your replies, i have enabled the 2FA (2 step verification, text on phone) for my google account. It still fails. Do I need to change my gmail password to a 16 digit password?

Did you create the app password? It's NOT your gmail password.

Quoted from the help text I linked.

Perfect thank you, it worked.

For anyone who cannot find the app password in their google security tabs, the options have changed. You can find it here.
