When will it be ready?

Any release notes ready or list of fixes and features?

Really, did you not read two posts above yours? I thought the software was suppose to offer redundancy, not the users  :o

Will you use some of your influence and get some answers.  You sound pretty smart.  Now please provide useful information.  Thanks

Ha, none of us really have any influence.

Useful information #1: Asking less than a week after the last person will not yield different results.

Useful information #2: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results...Ok, not the real definition but we all know that saying.

Useful information #3: June 28th is national Capslock Day

Hope that helps, and just in case, no, there is no ETA on Version 5 yet,  :)

Additional useful information:

ETA is never given for any of the releases. It will be released when it is ready. There is no point in asking or complaining. Silent contemplation may prove useful.

I don't understand the attitudes on here and I'm a bit shocked and dissappointed to enter there forums tonight and do some reading. Why can't we be given a rough ETA on version 5? Like will it be in 2012 for example. I dislike how everyone defends the amount of time it has taken to get even some sort of response/announcement from Tom. Then when he finally does make an annoucement, there is not one mention of the 4.7.1 release people are asking for since the 4.7 release people have paid for and deliberately stuck with for stability, is in fact broken with bugs that can corrupt your data.

This is a sad day for me an unraid. I do not get a chance to read on here a lot as have not fully got up and running yet myself with all my data, but just as I find the time to really start getting on with my build I discover the above with 4.7 and the further lack of info on version 5.

I don't have much experience with Unraid.  I just barely build my first UnRaid server, but I do agree with you.

You guys all need to calm down.  I should have just named 5.0-beta4 or -beta5, or one of those, "5.0-final".  Code's been solid for a long time, aside from h/w incompatibilities largely beyond my control.  Hopefully latest 3.2.13 linux kernel addresses some of these problems.....As for perception of my lack of involvement, rest assured I do nothing but work my ass off, sorry if that's not reflected in constant forum updates.

Tom has already addressed this; 5.0's code is solid and he wished he had added the meaningless label of "final" to it already because it would have saved a lot of bickering. Move to it if you're concerned with trusting 4.7 with your data. According to your response, you don't even have all your data contained on a 4.7 server anyway (you're in the process) so what the heck is holding you back from moving to 5.0.

I will be upgrading to 5.0 later this week.  I just finished getting my data back and now running a parity check.  If everything run good, I will go to 5b14.

What is holding me back? Well it's a beta still. If the code is that solid then maybe it should be released? I read of people having issues on beta builds and many threads where testers have to roll back to previous releases.

Also, I thought the issue with 4.7 data corruption was not fixed until 5 beta 8? I'm sure I read that somewhere. What release would you advise then? Am I supposed to pluck a particular beta of the 15 there are as being more stable than some of the others?

General Guidline

If you have a LSI controller then use b11 or b12a

If all you have is SAS or MB connections, then go with b14

Once you choose what you want to use, read that particular thread for any other issues (NFS, AFP, what have you) to determine if it would impact you or not.

In most cases, the issues with one of the beta builds would be due to what type of controller card(s) you use.

Furthering what Graywolf said, there are few problems with the beta's, and the "big" ones have to do with controllers, which isn't even a bug with unRAID, its a kernel bug. Go to the linux kernel forums and bitch at them about that. Tom has absolutely no control over kernel bugs.

The code is solid but Tom isn't releasing it as final until the kernel bugs are fixed, if you read the changelogs, most of the changes are upgrading apps to newest versions. Very few are actual fixes with unraid code.

Thank you GreyWolf for this concise and up to date post, we need a sticky for a post like this a the top of the forum and then all can see the current status.

A post like this is all most people are asking for instead of trolling through hundreds of posts to find the relevant details on the unRAID status...

can we have a sticky similar to this please ???? :o

There are far too many serious issues with b14 to be calling it stable.

Even I have network errors that I didn't have in b11 or earlier.

It may be the case that it is down to the kernel but still, the product isn't fit for a RC yet. It doesn't matter *where* the bugs come from, it is still a bug in a product people have paid for. :)

ok...not sure of the b14 issues since I have both LSI & SAS controller so I've been running b11 for quite awhile without issues.

Did have a drive die on me but that had nothing to do with what release I was running.

Replaced drive, rebuild of drive worked as normal, all is good in my world.

Is there any issue with going for a 5 beta version and then having to upgrade later on to the final one? I take it upgrading to the RC or Final build would be hassle free and supported being able to migrate over to it keeping data/array intact? I do not understand this talk of different controllers. I will be using 8 motherboard ports and when they run out I will buy a PCI card. Does this mean I only need SAS to start and then later need to pick a card with a particular controller type LSI or ??

There really needs to be a sticky for this! lol - but yeah if you buy a LSI-based HBA (SAS card), then you need to stick to b12a or earlier due to a bug in the drivers in the linux kernel post 12a.  If you buy the other popular card (Supermicro MV8), you can use b13/b14.

Yes, should be able to upgrade from beta to final without issue by following whatever is in the Upgrade instructions would be.

When you go to expand past the 8 MB ports, you will need a controller card, which there are many out there.

I have both Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 & IBM ServeRAID M1015 (LSI/flashed) Controllers. There are others out there.

The M1015 (LSI based) has issues above 5b12a whereas the MV8 does not.

It just is a bit concerning that there is like a branch here where some people are going to have to stay on 5b12a and others on the newer  betas due to hardware. I would be worried that people who stayed on say the beta12a would not be catered for when it comes to upgrading or something like that. It seems at the moment everything is a bit of a compromise for us customers that have bought into a product deliberately due to it being supposedly polished, stable and supported. Oh well. I guess I will probably grab 5b12a on the basis that this has the data kernel fixes and is less picky with hardware. What actual benefits do post 12a release bring in contrast to the hardware issues that can be encountered?

beta 15 is still pending so maybe some of these hardware issues will be handled better.

This is BETA software you are talking about, it clearly says at the top of the release notes

Please be aware that all measures have been taken to ensure data integrity, but this is beta software - use at your own risk.

If you want something that is stable and polished, use 4.7...

There is a reason they call it the bleeding edge

I think its important to point out, this is an issue with the Linux Kernel. This isn't Limetech deciding to leave people behind

You missed my point enrirely, in that I am saying no unraid product currently is stable. 4.7 is broken since last summer, or were you unaware of this as well? I only just found out by reading the 4.7 thread the other day as this issue has been kept relatively hidden. 4.7 is not stable. It has two major bugs.

I was saying that it is now difficult for custoemrs to decide whether to go with a broken 4.7 product, or to put faith in a beta release post 5.0beta8 to fix the 4.7 issues, which then comes with further issues selecting an actual beta release that will be compatible with your hardware since there are issues with certain controllers on certain beta releases.

.... 4.7 is broken since last summer,

Actually, if I understand correctly, 4.x has always been broken .. but it only came to light last summer.

More accurately, all versions of Linux RAID, of ALL Linux distributions, including unRAID 1.X, 2.X, 3.X, and 4.x have always had the same bug .. but it only came to light last summer.
