you can use "svn" to download unMENU and then transfer it to your server.

I don't know what svn really is or how to use it.  Know where I can look to read-up on it or how to use it to get unmenu

The link I supplied above perhaps? (where it references " Subversion repository may be accessed using many different client programs and plug-ins. ")

Google perhaps?

please don't bite my head off if this has been covered, but...i haven't run unMenu in years, but wanted to get back to it now that i have upgraded my server's storage capacity and made it useful again...the topic of this thread mentions unMENU 1.5, but on the google code pages i only see 1.371 from the year 2010...am i missing something? can the newer versions only be accessed by alternate means (i.e. SVN)? i see BConn having asked about SVN just before my post, so maybe i am being an ass for even asking this...

Yes, the umenu_install program has not changed since 2010, and it is still the same install script, but it installs the newest unMENU.

You did not miss anything... Just use the script from google.code, it will install unMENU 1.5

Hi, quick question from a newbie  :D

Why isn't there a Model Family showing up in myMain section smart view, all i get is WD (unknown family), when i see others MyMain screen shots the data's there.

Easy,

either the command

smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdX

cannot be run on your drive

OR

the resulting output from the command does not contain a line that indicates

Model Family

(probably because the drive is "Not in smartctl database" and was not matched in the identifiers known by the smartctl command. )

type

smartctl -P showall

to see its pattern matching rules

Here is the information section from an Hitachi drive on my server that also does not list a Model Family

root@Tower2:/# smartctl -a /dev/sdf

Typically older drives will be known, and some newer models may not, especially if you are not using the latest version of smartctl.  (unRAIDs included version is 5.40)

Is there a way to update it to the latest version, as on the sourceforge site its at v5.43

look on the web for a pre-compiled installable slackware package for that version.  download and install it.  There is no guarantee your disks will be in the database, as new disk families are created by marketing departments far more frequently than smartctl is updated.

to install it, type

installpkg "packagename.tgz"

Or,

send a note to Tom@ lime-tech asking for it to be updated to the newest release in a future version of unRAID. (Then wait 8))

Hi Joe

I downloaded smartmontools-5.40-i486-1.txz from http://pkgs.org/slackware-13.37/slackware-i486/smartmontools-5.40-i486-1.txz/download/ and dropped the file in /boot/packages (No idea if this is correct place to put it).

Then i navigated to the above directory and ran installpkg smartmontools-5.40-i486-1.txz

root@Pluto:/boot/packages# installpkg smartmontools-5.40-i486-1.txz
Verifying package smartmontools-5.40-i486-1.txz.

PACKAGE DESCRIPTION:
# smartmontools (hard drive monitoring utilities)
#
# SMARTMONTOOLS contains utilities that control and monitor storage
# devices using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology
# (S.M.A.R.T.) system build into ATA and SCSI Hard Drives. This is used
# to check the reliability of the hard drive and to predict drive
# failures.  SMARTMONTOOLS Version 5.x is designed to comply to the
# ATA/ATAPI-5 specification (Revision 1).  Future releases of
# SMARTMONTOOLS (Versions 6.x and 7.x) will comply with the ATA/ATAPI-6
# and ATA/ATAPI-7 specifications.
#
Executing install script for smartmontools-5.40-i486-1.txz.
Package smartmontools-5.40-i486-1.txz installed.

root@Pluto:/boot/packages#

Now when I run a smart report I get the 5.40 version, and when I look in myMain at the smart view some of my drives are now picked up.

Do I need to uninstall the previous version, as i still see it in the packages folder?

How can I get "model/serial"  to show up for my USB devices on the main page?

Today I finally upgraded from v4.5.6 > v4.7 > v5.0-rc5 of unRAID, so I could add a couple of 3TB drives to my array.  I also updated unMenu from 1.2 (old, I know!) to 1.5.  Everything seemed to go pretty smoothly, but for some reason I lost the "model/serial" information from my USB devices (under UNRAID drive and Drive Partitions - not in protected array) on my home page.

Here's how it looked under 4.5.6 with unmenu 1.2

x2jdxu.png

Here's how it looks under 4.7 with unmenu 1.5

c7rt2.png

When I use the command "ls -l /dev/disk/by-id", they do show up:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  9 2012-09-03 13:08 usb-Seagate_GoFlex_Desk_NA0ML92W-0:0 -> ../../sdc

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2012-09-03 13:08 usb-Seagate_GoFlex_Desk_NA0ML92W-0:0-part1 -> ../../sdc1

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  9 2012-09-03 13:08 usb-_Patriot_Memory_078C0DB80B0A-0:0 -> ../../sdd

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2012-09-03 13:08 usb-_Patriot_Memory_078C0DB80B0A-0:0-part1 -> ../../sdd1

so I'm not sure why the model/serial (and file system etc) is not showing up on the main page.

By the way, I shouldn't be worried that the drive assignments changed, should I?  Before I upgraded to 5.0-rc5, sdc was my parity drive, now it's the Seagate external drive I hooked up to USB.

What is the benefit of upgrading unMenu? What do you get in the new version that's missing in the old.

depends on how old your current version is...

For most, many fixes and updated packages with links to items that are not stale.  If you've got a really old version, lots of enhancements.

What version of unmenu are you running? (look on the "About"link to see)

Okay, I've got to be overlooking something.    WHERE is the v1.5 download?    I've searched and only find the Dec 4 2010 download (unmenu_install1371.zip)    Does that installer automatically install the most current version?    If so, do I first have to uninstall the old version I'm using (v1.2)?

And does it work okay with v4.7, or is this update just for v5?

With a basic -- and highly stable -- v4.7 system running UnMenu v1.2 what benefit is there to upgrading?    The ONLY feature I really use UnMenu for is UPS support -- although I do periodically run the SMART tests and like the more detailed display of space utilization.

Is there a "version history" that outlines the improvements that have been made as UnMenu evolved?

If I understand the bits that I've read correctly, one very nice improvement is that UnMenu now has an automated update check (and, I presume, auto-installs the updates on demand ... is this correct?)

The "installer" script has not changed in years... It is why it is from 2010.  It will install the latest version of unRAID. (which at this time is the 1.5 version you are looking for)  Downloadfrom here:

http://code.google.com/p/unraid-unmenu/downloads/detail?name=unmenu_install1371.zip&can=2&q='>http://code.google.com/p/unraid-unmenu/downloads/detail?name=unmenu_install1371.zip&can=2&q=

Install as described here: http://code.google.com/p/unraid-unmenu/

The reason it is difficult to see all the updates and changes in one spot is unMENU is a series of plugins, and many were created and updated over the years by users just like you.

The closest to a single list in one spot is on google.code

http://code.google.com/p/unraid-unmenu/source/list

unfortunately, it is not very descriptive in many cases.

I cannot guarantee everything in unMENU's 1.5 version will function the very earliest 1.X versions of unRAID, but I'll bet most would work just fine.  I've just not tested them on those early versions.    Since you are running 4.7, you'll be perfectly fine.  (my older unRAID server runs unRAID 4.7, so it is well tested there)

If you eventually upgrade to unRAID 5.X you'll find that the newer versions of unMENU will be needed to work properly on the 5.X versions of unRAID.  This is because unRAID itself has changed in where it stores some of  its configuration parameters.

The latest version of unMENU will still work with your older version of unRAID.  (and your apcupsd package will still stay the same)    So, you can install it without fear of it not working on an older release of unRAID.  You do not need to un-install the prior version of unMENU.

You will find huge changes in the available screens to see your smart reports and status in the myMain plugin.

Thanks Joe,

I was just being overly cautious -- I suspected that was the case, but didn't want to take a chance on messing something up.    Update is done & working fine -- I haven't yet "played" with the new features;  but you're right ... there's a lot of nifty new stuff and nicely improved screens.  Thanks (again) for a great add-in.

Hi Joel

I've just installed unmenu 1.5 and some packets with the packet manager. But after several retrys for a few hours iftop is still unavailable. After a little research it seems that http://www2.linuxpackages.net/ site is dead. I've found a few topics about is dead since late 2011.

There is any other place to download it?

Thanks and Cheers.

I have attached a new version of the iftop-unmenu-package.conf file, using a different repository.  Copy the file to the packages directory on your flash drive.  Be careful updating unmenu as it will copy the older version until Joe L updates it.

Edit: updated attachment due to error.

Questions r.e. the SMART details shown when running a SMART Status Report on the UnMenu Disk Management page ...

(1)  Is there a good overview of what the various values actually mean?  I can find plenty of descriptions of the generic meaning of any specific attribute (e.g. "Raw_Read_Error_Rate") ... but nothing that really says what the Value/Worst/Threshold columns mean of what values are acceptable in these columns.    I presume the "Raw Value" column is the current value -- right?    For example, for this specific parameter, one of my drives shows 200-001-051 in the 3 columns, and a raw value of 0.

(2)  What does "In_the-past" means in the "When Failed" column?    Does this mean the drive has previously failed a SMART test, but now passes??    I just ran SMART Status reports on all my drives, and this one drive has this value (all the others are all clear in the "When Failed" column).

All of my drives show "SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED"

... but this one drive has the strange "In_the-past" comment.    Just curious what that might mean.

FWIW I've attached a PDF showing the SMART data for the drive with the strange comment.

Hi All I installed unMenu on both my servers. Now my media servers I need to enter guest as a username for my media streamer where before I didnt have to enter anything. My unraid server is running the latest beta and the USERS under the original unraid menu has just root listed as an account.

How can I make it so everything do not need any user name or pass?

You probably have a password on the "root" account.  this has nothing directly with unMENU, but unRAID itself.

the work-around for unMENU is to install the image-server package.  For unRAID you cannot use"root" for remote access on current releases.  you must connect as a different user or set the security to the correct mode.
