The file is created when you enable VMs under Settings->VM Manager and the path to that file is also set there.

OK I changed the disk size from 1GB to 20 and now it created the file.

thanks

There is no need to have a file anywhere near that big.    The default size of 1GB is probably far more than is needed as all that is stored inside it is configuration information about the VM service and any VMs you create.

Ok how do I change that?  I don't see that option in the VM settings any longer. I do see the btrfs as 20GB.

NM figured it out

Hi Guys,

I've been using Unraid for years now, but only as a file server.  Today I've started looking at Dockers and VM's and since I'm still a noob at those, of course I've run into my first snag.  I also get the "Libvirt Service failed to start" message after enabling VM's in the VM manager.  When I look (with midnight commander) at the /mnt/user/system/libvirt directory, there is no such file as "libvirt.img".  They way I understand it, Unraid should create this file automatically when the VM's are enabled, no?

What am I doing wrong?  (Unraid version is 6.8.0 rc6)

Thanks!

IMAGE_FILE="/mnt/user/system/libvirt/"

Common mistake.  The libvirt storage location points to a file, not to a folder.  Add libvirt.img to the end of it in the settings

Ok.  I've now added the libvirt.img to the storage location, so it now reads "/mnt/user/system/libvirt/libvirt.img".  Still, no file is created and the error remains.  (when I ssh into the server, I still see no file).

I've added another diagnostics file.

Go to Settings -> VM Manager and set a valid path to "Default ISO storage path:"

Thanks Johnnie!  I'm not home at the moment, but I'll make sure to try this tonight when I get back.

Cheers!

Edit.  That worked!  Thanks a lot!

I'm facing a similar issue too. I've tried all the steps detailed above and unable to find a resolution. I also copied over my libvirt.img file from a backup, but still no luck.

Here's what I see in my libvirt logs under Settings > VM Manager

Also attaching my diagnostics. Any help would be much appreciated! I've made a lot of tweaks a lot on my VM and would hate to lose all of it :(

Libvirt.img started correctly after boot, then it stopped working because of a duplicate UUID, reboot and post new diags if you still have issues.

Thanks for the tip! I'll reboot the server once I'm back home in 2 days, since I'm worried I won't be able to log back into it via OpenVPN upon reboot. (Array has a password, so does my root account)

Wireguard would work better in this instance, however, I'd always recommend a backup method to get in to your home network. Router based VPN can be one way, a different way would be a pc with teamviewer or some other remote access package that runs all the time.

Reboot did the trick for me! Thanks so much!

Hello, I didn't want to create a new topic as I'm experiencing this same issue with "Libvert Service failed to start" appearing. I've rebooted, I've tried to restore the previous Libvert.img. I've made sure that it's pointing to an img file as shown here2481038_Annotation2020-03-24231308.thumb.jpg.909690bc70faab146885754339a0efce.jpg

I've included the diagnostics. What's strange is this happened after I downloaded the newest VirtIO Driver ISO after building a second VM.

It appears to be starting correctly at array start, it then failed to restart, rebooting should fix that.

Just tried rebooting again, same issue, still says "Libvirt Service failed to start"

Do you have something restarting the service? Like mentioned it starts correctly at first array start, try booting in safe mode.

Nothing that I know of, would I just boot it without plugins? I see there's a no plugin and a no plugin, no gui option.

Yes, safe mode

Just tried starting it in safe mode, started up the array manually and got the same error. Should I upload the diagnostics?

Just now, severanced said:

Yes.

Now it's a different issue than before, the image is corrupt:

Mar 25 11:14:57 CrusherJoe kernel: BTRFS error (device loop3): bad tree block start, want 30408704 have 0

Restore from backup then boot again is safe mode.
