Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array

Share it in Windows and then mount it as a remote mount in UD.  You will then have access to the disk in Unraid.

Okay thank you.  Though my preferred scenario would be having it mounted via unraid so I can actually power my desktop off instead of always on sharing with those that access my media server.

So looking at it, short of formatting the drives in the DAS, it doesn't seem like it's possible to mount in unraid using UD?

No.

Hello,

I'm using rsync to backup a windows smb share mounted to my unraid server via the unassigned devices plugin. When rsync is transferring a file and the windows computer is disconnected from the network during the transfer, the rsync hangs indefinitely. I tried using the --timeout option, unsuccessfully (no difference with or without the option...). Here is the command i used in the shell :

rsync -av --human-readable --itemize-changes --timeout=10 SMB_SOURCE DEST

Where SMB_SOURCE is the path to the mounted smb share and DEST is the path to the unraid share.

Any idea of what I'm doing wrong ?
Thanks

Try it this way:

timeout 10 rsync -av --human-readable --itemize-changes SMB_SOURCE DEST

The timeouot in the rsync command will not timeout rsync on an SMB share that goes offline.

Thank you for your quick reply.

The issue with the timeout command is that it stops rsync 10 seconds after the execution starts. If I have a large file to sync, it won't finish. I could repeatedly run this command with a longer timeout and the --partial option in rsync to resume unfinished transfers, but it wouldn’t be very clean. If you have another idea, I’d be glad to hear it. Otherwise I will go with this option.

Your best bet is to keep this friom happening.

Your idea of incremental file transfers would also work.

Another approach is to check that the WIndows computer is online (ping) before starting an rsync, and keep it on line while files are being transferred.

With the method from back then (by Spaceinvaderone) and the entries via SMB Extras, you could simply specify /mnt for a rootshare.

This also provided access to individual disks.

With the ‘Root Share’ feature in UD, only /mnt/user or /mnt/user0 can be used, correct?

@dlandon

Can you confirm this or is only /mnt possible?

For the Spaceinvaderone solution?

Spaceinvader's solution describes how it works with /mnt. What I read afterwards, however, is that this is not a good way. The solution with UD is supposed to be “better”. But /mnt is not possible there, or is it?

No, only /mnt/user or /mnt/user0.

Just as I thought. Are there any plans to create the possibility for /mnt? Or would then only the variant with the SMB extras help?

@dlandon

The "root share" Feature within UD only works if Disk Share is disabled.

But I want access to a single disk as well.

So, is it possible to integrate it in UD?

Linux is not recognizing the disk drive.  I would reboot and get into the Bios and see if the disk shows.  Are you sure the power and data cables are working?

Strange that it worked before but not now.  But if you say it isnt detected in BIOS, that explains it all.

I'll check the BIOS and see what I find.

Worst case I can try a liveboot ubuntu/debian etc.

Thanks DLandon

Unreal... for reasons I cannot explain the BIOS had external USB ports disabled.

Made a quick change and everything is working fine.

Because the OS was booting I never thought to check USB in the BIOS.  Never thought of internal UDB vs external USB.

My only concern now is how the OS keeps track of the devices.

I have a Dev 1 and a dev 1.

I suppose as long as unraid uses the Identification info and not anything else I should be OK.

Thanks dlandon

I don't understand how it is mounting.  Do you have a script somewhere that is mounting the USB device with the UD script?  To keep UD from doing anything to the USB device, unmount it, then go to the device settings and mark it 'Passed Through'.

Hi,

I ran a preclear and after it was done I checked the log and saw that after it finished zeroing it logged

paused followed by three lines of

killing smartctl with pid 1121 - probably stalled ...

after that it continued with the post read and finished without any issue

Can I ignore this or does this mean there's likely something wrong with the disk?

edit: all other disks that I ran a preclear on did not show this behavior

No, scripts. I don't see a way to specifically mark the USB drive as pass-through. In the pcie devices list , they are all grouped together.

you mark this in the UAD setting of the device

I'm looking for help accessing to access an SMB share on Windows. My windows machines can see the share OK but when I try and add as a remote smb share in Unraid so I can copy files to Unraid from the share unraid wont mount it and says remote server is offline.

I'm new to Unraid and only just setting up the server so maybe I'm doing something wrong here. I have the Unassigned Devices app installed and have successfully mounted my Synology Nas as an SMB share but can't get any windows shares to work.

The best way to do it is to click add a share, select the Windows icon, then click on "Search for Servers", choose the Windows computer, then enter your credentials.  Once you get on the Choose Share dialog, click on "Load Shares".  If shares don't show, you have a credentials problem.

If the "Search for Servers" does not show the Windows computer, go to the Settings->Unassigned Devices, click on the "Remote Servers" and enter the Windows computer name and see what UD finds about the Windows computer and SMB sharing.

Thanks for your help but that's exactly what I've been doing and the shares wont show up. When you say credentials problem I assume you mean windows is denying access . On the windows desktop I have given full control to "Everyone" and even tried turning off requirement for authorisation for share access. Other windows PC on the network can see and read/write to the shares but not Unraid even though its the same credentials. Is there something in Unraid I'm missing that would enable access ?

You need to enter Windows credentials (login credentials) to show the shares and mount the remote share, even if you have it turned off.
