Attached!

Please remove the sound driver plugin, reboot and see if that makes a difference.

It is nice to see that you are using this plugin but I'm currently not supporting it officially since I have not enough free spare time to do so.

I think it might be the cause of the issue. If it's the cause of the issue I will maybe fix this for the next Unraid version.

Amazing, that did the trick! Thank you! I don't think I needed the sound driver plugin anyway and just forgot to uninstall it.

radeon-top deleted itself on a reboot and won't reinstall. Using a Ryzen 5700G, no dedicated GPU. It had been working previously.

Checking previous posts I tried modprobe:

root@LongServer:~# modprobe -v amdgpu
insmod /lib/modules/6.1.49-Unraid/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu.ko.xz
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'amdgpu': Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

The log says:

Sep 9 07:58:34 LongServer kernel: amdgpu: Unknown symbol dev_coredumpm (err -2)

Any ideas? Diagnostics attached.

Do you have the sound plugin installed?

If yes, reboot and then try to install radeontop again.

I do (trying to use steam-headless on the connected display). Rebooting didn't work.

After a series of uninstalls/reinstalls/reboots - if the sound driver is installed. amdgpu fails on boot. If it's removed, it starts working again after reboot. I can't get the sound driver and radeon-top installed at the same time.

[edit] fwiw, I don't know if the sound driver was actually working - prior to rebooting, steam-headless still only showed the null sound device after adding /dev/snd restarting the docker. Post-reboot with just the sound driver, I couldn't get in to see if there was another sound device due to the amdgpu failure.

Sorry, my answer was not clear.

You have to uninstall the sound-driver plugin, reboot and then reinstall radeon-top because it is causing issues currently,  the plugin is not officially supported!

Ahhh, got it. Okay, so I'll give up on sound in steam for now.

Latest update to intel-GPU Top seems have killed HW transcode. GPU is doing something but most of the processing is now done by CPU.

The update from Intel-GPU-TOP is not able to kill your transcoding since intel_gpu_top is just a software tool that reads the usage from your iGPU, nothing more.

The driver and everything is exactly the same.

Do you use by any chance Plex and the web client to test that, it is well known that the web client has issues with transcoding.

How did you test that transcoding is not working?

Diagnostics?

Yes it was the web client I used. I will go try a shield device and report back

*edit*
You are correct still works appears to be related to the web client. I was not aware that was an issue. Learned something new. I will have to try that out on an ubuntu system see if also has an issue with web client.

This is a well known issue, you should report that on the Plex forums, this only affects the Plex web client on all platforms, it‘s also not related if you are using Intel, Nvidia, AMD for transcodig.

This is a Plex issue.

it wasn't intel-gpu-top, it was the latest Plex update.
if you are using the LSIO container, try v1.32.5.7349-8f4248874 which worked fine.

This is a Plex issue.

this problem isn't the web client, it is the latest update.
if you are using any other clients or platforms and using the HDR tonemapping, it won't use hardware transcoding:

Folks,

Sure you've all heard of the changes we had.

We lost a lot of good people.

The fundamental problem was there wasn't ample time to do a coordinated hand-off of work. Unfortunately stuff got lost in that transition (institutional knowledge)

We know of the regressions. We've got a few of the transcoder regressions fixed already.I'm working on isolating another.

Here's what I know

HEVC HDR -> SDR tonemapping does fail for folks. There isn't a pattern yet. (What I'm trying to identify)

Turn HDR -> SDR tonemapping OFF and it HW transcoding works reliably again.

This looks like a OpenCL problem with Intel CPUs but I've not completed investigating.

If folks want to come to the forum and help me with more info, I would greatly welcome it.There are not enough hours in the day for me to support the forum, development, and Reddit.

My priorities are Forum & Development for now.Hope you all understand.

ich777 Is actually correct. I am on the older version (7349) of plex. I am aware of the condition you are mentioning and did not upgrade plex.

This is a Plex issue.

Just wanted to reaffirm this statement if any folks have doubts. I started up the linux machine (same box I am running unraid) with PMS 7349 and I see the same thing. Via web browser even though it says HW transcode it uses 32% of my CPU.  Even if I use my iphone I see significant CPU effort involved in transcoding. Something I never noticed before. If I use Nvidia shield device as player CPU effort is near 0 to transcode.

Maybe because you didn‘t look into it like you do now.

Transcoding always depends if you need to transcode audio too, in this case for your phone it looks like it is necessary (audio transcoding is of course done on the CPU).

For a Nvidia Shield you don‘t have to transcode in most situations because it can play almost all formats regardless of video or audio.

Also keep in mind that Plex can‘t handle subtitles well at times IIRC and that can also be a big hit on your CPU.

You are correct looks like subtitles makes the biggest hit I will try this on unraid next. Also correct in I wasn't paying as close attention. I am evaluating unraid to switch to from proxmox. So trying to put it through it's paces.
