  1. Great! Will have to think how to reposition all my drives once again 🙂 Looks like I will be assigning an SSD to my VM permanently, and an HDD to my cache drive. Add to that, I'll be replacing all my drives to SAS 3 TB. Looks like a huge task ahead for me. But to have an HDD as cache, and VM to unassigned disk may be something I should have done way earlier.
  2. So a single spinner alone will have been suffice for cache drive, not even SAS is required? Any drive that can perform better than 125 MBps would be ok to assign as Cache drive?
  3. Actually, I'm proposing to squeeze 4 2.5" SATA HDDs to the existing 4 3.5" SATA HDDS Are you saying we won't get along? Add to that an HBA controller I'm asking here.
  4. Currently, I use an nvme as cache, and at the same time, used for VM. I was reading another Forum, and it was saying for Gigabit network, a SAS 10k rpm drive would be fast enough to read/ write without causing bottleneck. Is this correct? Will my 7200 rpm drive, H7230AS60SUN3.0T - Sun 3TB 7200RPM SAS 6GB/s 64MB Cache Hot-Pluggable 3.5-inch Hard Drive, be enough to do the same? Assuming it is plugged into a Dell perc h310. I believe it uses LSI SAS 2008. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. If it cannot be replaced, the current cable terminates in SFF-8087. I can just unplug it, and connect it to an HBA controller, and not plug it to the onboard one. Sorry, what's IIRC?
  6. My main unraid server is currently a Fractal Design Node 804. Just thinking, I have this model lying around. It's called HP Microserver N40L, with an AMD Turion processor. I can't recall how many GB I have on my memory. Behind those 3.5" bays, I assume there is a backplane, with cable such as this. I want to add 4 more sata drives. I'm thinking what if I placed an IcyDock ExpressCage. And use an HBA controller that accepts 2 internal SFF-8087 and at the back, have an SFF-8088 port, and plug it onto my Fractal as additional drives, will this work? Currently, the HDDs from the bays are currently connected to the SAS port on the motherboard. I believe I can plug it to the additional HBA controller I'm gonna connect? The HBA controller gets power from the PCI-e slot from the motherboard? I believe it is PCI-e Gen 2, x16 slot. Which card can you recommend? Thanks
  7. Yup, I agree. Don't know what a brake is, may start to research The 2.5" drivers are smaller in form factor, and lighter on the bookshelf . But Yes, 3.5 would be the norm, and prices should come down quickly, specially for SAS drivers. I recently got 20 pcs of 3 TB 3.5" drives HGST for 303 USD, shipped. Will keep options open.
  8. Hi @Keexrean, I did read your post carefully, and read it more than once . Yes, prefer to use standard form factor, mini-itx at least, hence I said it's impossible, as you so pointed out. With Mini-itx, we still get fairly powerful options, and can easily be replaced to upgrade. But when we say rackmount form factor, it can indeed be Unraid on a 1U, then another hacked (12") 25 x 2.5" DAS Though I recently brought a Dremel, we haven't become best of friends yet, so will put that off for now. I do hope we see more such form factors out there, for prosumer
  9. Sorry for my wires above. Haven't gone through routing the wires yet. For the Supermicro server that acts as my firewall, I gutted out the Atom board that came with the chassis, and stuck a Supermicro X10SLM+-LN4F to the unit. Front Panel leds work perfectly, and I have 4 ports for my firewall, and a management port. I also selected a Core i3-4160T low TDP processor, I think about 30 TDP, and put in a low profile fan from Gelid Polar. I use pico psu, and external Seasonic 12V adapter. @Keexrean, thank you for pointing out that to have everything in 12" depth is impossible, as the depth of mini-itx motherboard, plus HDD (3.5) without the backplane, would have exceeded 12" already, so this will never happen. I've never thought about it that way. I prefer it to be rackmount because everything is standard width, and can be arranged in a visually appealing way. Specially if all black. The rackmount Qnaps, Netgears, that are Arm based, are probably a bit too low powered for me as of the moment. But I'm hopeful that more powerful Arm based boards become more common. then again, it may not be a board that small anymore. I also believe Unraid won't support Arm. So I prefer X86 based M/B for now. @Benson, thank you for sharing U-NAS chassis. I have wanted that case for a long time, long before I wanted the rackmount form factor. I liked the hotswap front bays, and U-NAS NSC-810a can fit a Micro-ATX form factor motherboard, my preferred form factor rather than just mini-itx. To be honest, in the absence of rackmounts, this is the next best thing. To share with you, I am currently using a Fractal Design Node 804 case. It's very easy on the eyes, all black box. Though, I cannot put it below my rackmount devices, since it's more than 12 inches in depth. When all is arranged in order, it looks so... eye-candy . I guess in the end, I will have to accept it won't happen. Although there is a form factor we can always hope for, 24x 2.5 SAS/ SATA/ SSD drives rackmount with backplane DAS, 12" depth without motherboard, connected to my 1U Supermicro Unraid Server via HBA external port Till then, I'm off to dreamland to dream of my unicorn
  10. Wow, such a lively discussion now :-) Let me reply tonight :-) What I have so far. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. hi @Mark A, did you find a solution to your ideal NAS? I too was searching for this before, as I want something rackmount in looks, though I don't have a rack. My purpose is to put it on the bookshelf, together with Cisco Switch, and Supermicro Firewall. My restriction is also 12" depth max, as that is the depth of the bookshelf. I am not limited to 4 bay, 8 bay or 12 bay may even be better, so as long as they are 12U in depth. That gives me instant access to drives that may fail, and having a 2 or 3U NAS, with hotswap bays, stacked together with my 1U firewal, and Cisco Switch, would look pretty awesome Alas, nothing is 12" in depth.
  12. Hi. I have 10 SATA drives (mostly 2 TB, 1 TB) that I want to replace to 3 TB SAS drives. I only wanted to repllace 8 SATA drives as my controller can only accommodate 8. Of the 8, 1 of them is parity, the rest are drives in the array. I have SAS controller, and cables, so this is not an issue. Another problem is that my license is Unraid OS Plus. Apart from the 10 SATA, I also have 1 cache drive. So I technically can only add 1 more drive to stay within limit, to have Unraid recognize my additional drives. What should I do first?
  13. Are you saying mouse may experience lag, but when using Dualshock 4, it's responsive?
  14. I want to achieve this to work with League of Legends, but I hope it can reach 80-100 fps stable.
  15. @zeus83, don't you get delays from keyboard and mouse when using Moonlight for FPS games? I did.
  16. How many steps to get Parsec gaming working? Serverbuilds.net gave a lot of pointers to get the most performance out of your VM- https://forums.serverbuilds.net/t/guide-remote-gaming-on-unraid/4248/8 @dodgypast, did you do a lot of these cpu pinning, passthrough bios to get good performance?
  17. Hi. Anyone teach me a way to monitor this USB, why it keeps on disconnecting randomly. Currently, I doubt it's cable issue, or product issue (extenders). Something in my Server, VM, is malfunctioning. Hope someone can shed some light.
  18. Hi @johnnie.black, any idea which release will feature SAS spindown? Does it mean with SAS Spin down, drives not accessed will use less power? I believe SAS eat more electricity than SATA?
  19. Hi. Still am not able to resolve my usb keyboard and mouse disconnecting intermittently. I'd like to state my setup once again. I am using Monitor, keyboard and mouse away from Unraid. 20M away. Hence I bought HDMI extender via RJ45 (this requires 2 UTP cable), and works without flaw. I also use USB extender over RJ45, such as this: And these are the ones giving me problems. Not these brands though. They are pretty generic. I use a simple Aten USB hub I have from before, and have mouse and keyboard connected to the same hub, then to the USB extender shown above. Troubleshooting steps I've done, and their results are below: 1. Gave the USB hub 5V power- disconnected, no visible improvement regarding connection 2. Added another USB extender to separate the keyboard and mouse, one of the usb devices keep disconnecting. It's always 1 that is disconnecting. 1 is more reliable than the other. I finally had to choose whether It's keyboard or mouse I'm willing to disconnect regularly . 3. Since I have a working HDMI extender using 2 cat5e cables, I rotated each of those cables to use with my USB extender, and vise versa. Original USB cat5e cables, when used with HDMI extender, works flawlessly. The HDMI cables on the other hand, (one at a time) when used on the USB extender still experienced the same problems. In some cases, more frequently. But since this is intermittent, cannot really say how often, and every how many minutes this occurs. 4. Changed the USB port on my NAS that the USB extender is connected to. Upon checking, I seem to have 3 USB controllers. NEC 3.0, and other 2. But they all had the same results. No matter where I connect, it keeps disconnecting. Since this VM is used for gaming, you can imagine how frustrating when in game, it suddenly disconnects . Specially when in a ranked game. Only way for me to reconnect is to use the USB hotplug I found here. But even with hotplug, I have to go to Unraid page, and click on the USB device that disconnected, then attach to the VM. This takes about 5 seconds or more. I've tried to see how I can connect to a separate USB controller that is not in use by Sandisk (Unraid) and have that USB controller passed through to the VM, but after following video instructions, it doesn't seem to be possible to be decoupled with the other USBs. Am at wits' end on how to solve this. Anyone have suggestions?
  20. Follow-up question, is there any link here in the forum that teaches how to maximize gaming performance in VMS? With Nvidia GPU passed through
