  • Cache Mover Update   see the extra part in the config page (here incl. opened help sections)     Media Server Mode:   off (or empty), will ONLY run regular mod

  • ok, never thought of that (yet)   noted, and yes, no deal breaker ... just have to think about how to tag either Docker or VM ... will leave a note here.   thanks for the feedback

  • Yes , only unbinding than reboot makes the gpu free than I attach it to VM and than it works for VM only and cannot be used for docker containers . To make it work for docker container i have to bind

yep, you need that in terms after a stop, continue or next episode Plex can see the file on cache ...

if your Share is array only, then Plex cant see by default the file, so yes, its mandatory ...

otherwise it ll only work when the plugin triggered, copied, switched live ... but as soon you stop, start ... it ll start over from array again and then next plugin trigger, it ll copy (fast as file is already there), switch, ... but thats not the recommended way ;)

IF you are using the mediaserver Option (this is a optional feature), then those 2 should be setup in the rewrite parts ... as there is no 1:1 relationship /mnt/user/... but while we on there, please also read the help sections for each setting,

/media

/mnt/user/Media << WITHOUT the trailing slash like described ;)

as Plex user you dont actually need the Mediaserver setting ... when does it makes sense

1/ you want ONLY to cache files which are used by your MediaServer

2/ you are a Jellyfin (sometimes also Emby) user which behaves different on regular file access ...

3/ if you often balance your Shares (move files from disk1 > disk2 as sample manually)

...

these scenarios are cases when ... thats why there is also the multi Option, cause if you want also VLC smb caching ... and using Jelly or Emby as Mediaserver ... then Multi makes sense, so all is covered.

but actually in my point of view, brackets in filenames ... post processing in other apps can cause issues ...

but yes, on my todo list, but i wont invest endless time therefore ... in my personal opinion, its a failed naming schema, i followed all Plex rules actually and there are no brackets ;) but im aware other "sideapps" are including imdb in brackets ...

Okay, I have renamed all the folders and files to remove brackets { } and only using ( ). The movie file is now moving to cache_media pool. Two odd things are now happening. Cache Mover is moving the entire movie directory including any meta files poster images. Also, even with "switch" used instead of "close," Jellyfin is not switching to the cache file but is still using the file on the array.

g morning,  yes, thats  intended to ... makes no sense to keep subs as sample on hdd while running the movie, the show ... would always end up in spinups ... but, new version (currently here in beta) has the option to "file only"

next update will include this but will be a "not recommended" feature as described ...

also "binge" watching a TV Show, regular it ll copy the whole season folder, file mode will only copy the 1 episode, so next episode will then again call the hdd 1st ... just as note before.

btw, you should use copy mode, not move mode, will be removed in future releses ... so the copy will be removed then anyway after watched and keep hours is done.

looks like you already using it, just to make sure ...

the "mode" switch or close has nothing todo with the file transfers ... its whats happening afterwards ...

close > kill the running file access to hdd, your playback on client will freeze ... you need to stop / start to have the benefit to use the cache (pool) file instead array (disk), while switch mode will do it "live" and you have no interruption.

jellyfin ... should work too, now as jelly is sometimes special what can happen ... as jelly is doing some caching and loosing its real file access to disk.

1/ jelly mediaserver mode must be used to keep files copy to cache (pool)

2/ may cannot switch live as jelly have no open files on disk ...

3/ but, if your jelly media server is setup to a cache > array user Share

4/ it will use the cached file on its next access (own reading for own caching)

so, please check

1/ is your Share which Jelly access also /mnt/user/... with a cache > array setup on Unraid

2/ is jelly setup to use /mnt/user/... and not /mnt/cache + /mnt/disk1 + /mnt/disk2 + ....

Hey Alturismo, love the plugin, as someone who has their server temporarily located in the room that I watch my media it has saved me so much frustration, so thank you so much.

I'm just curious if it still works as intended with version 7.0?

Thanks for the support on the lease question. I noticed all of sudden my radarr doesn’t have access to move. I also noticed the movies filter from the downloader is in the list of cache and ignor. If I take it manually would that help? Now sure how it got there.IMG_2154.thumb.png.3035d835cbd8e967ecdd9741326b9564.png

well ... if your ARR Apps are reading files from array (i never will understand why ARR should run on array) and you did use multi function or regular only instead mediaserver only ... you have multiply choices ...

in the end its like read from disks (no media playback), then turn it off while using or use mediaserver option only ...

image.png.2d920b0fa81c5318465e5cc825833340.png

or, use the exclusion function therefore (extra builded in therefore ...)

image.png.5939d04a8214b0715cc367c2e88513f2.png

so like /completed ... would exclude this subdir from running anything ...

or adjust your cron times while you have your ARR tasks running

image.thumb.png.1ba9e1b10777b709783f53fa19ea85eb.png

i cant imagine what else would be needed to not collide with ARR, encoding, ... apps ?

if you have a recent scenario, let me know ;) feedback always welcome, but may please check the existing buildin functions.

Yes, I believe I have all the Cache Mover settings correct. See image.

Here's my Jellyfin docker volumes:
/data <--> /mnt/user/media/library
/config <--> /mnt/user/appdata/jellyfin

Cache Mover copies the movie file to cache_media, but Jellyfin does not "switch" to the pool, instead it continues to read from the array.

ok, how do you check this ? can you provide the cache mover log from a non working switch after copy ?

also, may a screen from your library setup pathes and Share settings for /media, thanks ahead

the way I checked it was to view the Main page, watching the array disk with the original copy continue to be read every few seconds. I confirmed this with the Open Files plugin showing that Jellyfin continued to use the file on disk2 instead of the newly created copy on cache_media

still missing, how is your setup to libs inside jelly

/mnt/user/media/... ? sample from Emby

what you see, there is no switch happening (possible jelly behaviour), but this shouldnt be the big issue as long Jelly reopens properly, so may a final screen from your media setup inside jelly please

ok, here the changelog for the following update later today

 ###2025.01.27
  - cache mover additional options besides regular cache - array setup
  - cache pool (ssd) outside the regular array (see support forum for mergerfs option to benefit)
  - multiply sources outside regular array (see support forum for mergerfs option to benefit)
  - multiply rewrite function for Mediaserver mounts added if there is a multi array setup
  - upper features requires some Fuse System, recommended mergerfs plugin to build a proper Share
  - sample mounts will follow in Forum to benefit from cache mover together with external pool or external disks, arrays
  - together with mergerfs Shares
  -
  - no more source disk setup necessary (in terms not all disks wanted, use existing exclusion function)
  - existing setups dont need any reconfiguration, only if new functions are wanted to be used
  - copy file only mode (not recommended, only as feature been wished)
  - removed move mode function, copy was and is recommended to not play ping pong with files, no more option therefore

here just some notes ahead

### General Note
Cache Mover is running where the disks are physically, no /remote support !!!
Special Character like brackets may break usage
recommended MediaServer Setup will always be /mnt<>/mnt for a 1:1 relation outside / inside (mot manadatory)

### Standard Usage changes (like now)
standard array usage (Standard cache > array Share setup)
source1	disk1 disk2 diskN << automatically now (removed from Config, no disk1, 2, 3, setup anymore)
source2	..
target1	pool (cache) << to define in webui config
>> sum, removed source disks config, in terms not all wanted, use existing exclusion function

### non Standard Usage (new)
non Standard array usage (sample, cache is a UAD or sep pool device outside Share, array disks or UAD disks > mergerfs Share setup required)
source1	disk1 disk2 diskN
and / or
source2	disks/whatever1 disks/whatever2 disks/whateverN
target1	pool (cache or disks/my_sep_cache) << to define in webui config
>> sum, all disks are automatically watched for a open file, no config therefore needed, only 1 target which need to be defined

### required mergerfs Share setup for non Standard Usage (new), samples
>> mergerfs ... category.search=ff /mnt/cache/Media:/mnt/disk1/Media:/mnt/disks/whatever1/Media:/mnt/disks/whatever2/Media /mnt/addons/mergerfs/Media
>> mergerfs ... category.search=ff /mnt/disks/my_sep_cache/Media:/mnt/disk1/Media:/mnt/disks/whatever1/Media:/mnt/disks/whatever2/Media /mnt/addons/mergerfs/Media
>>>> IMPORTANT, pool (cache) device 1st !!! see further Infos down

>> Plex setup, use mergerfs Share like /mnt/addons/mergerfs/Media instead Standard (simulated Array via mergerfs with pool disk 1st)
>> Plex setup, docker path mounts ... recommended 1:1 relation, like /mnt<>/mnt ... then there are NO rewrite rules necessary
>>>> there is a rewrite section like /data:/mnt/user/Media /data2:/mnt/addons/mergerfs/Media just in case, see recommended /mnt ...
>>>> its a ":" sepearated for each mount (already configured ones are taken over)

### Changes overall in sum
plugin will always check all disks in /mnt/disk1, 2, 3, ... and /mnt/disks/uad1, uad2, uad3, ... for open files, either regular, Mediaserver or multi mode
move option removed (only copy support from disk to pool, wasnt recommended anyway)
copy option extended (only single file instead folder, not recommended as sep. sub files, next episode on a TV Show, will always retrigger, spinup, ...)
plugin will rewrite and copy to pool in terms all matching (subfolder, filetype, not excluded, ...)
plugin will switch to new location from Standard or non Standard disks to Standard or non Standard pool

### why mergerfs
plugin actually doesnt need this, its for further usage of your cached files and benefit from caching to a ssd
> if you are using a pool device which is not inside /mnt/user/... your Client wont be able to access the file when reopening a switched file,
> so it would then again open the file on disk instead ... plugin would switch again, and so on ... instead directly opening a cached file on Share ...
> it will work only as long a file is steady open without a proper Share setup, and Jelly, Emby likes to reopen files during usage ...
plugin actually also wouldnt need it for sep. disk pools and so on to copy from disk to cache
> same story, your accessed Share must include pool(ssd),disk1, disk2, disks/whatever1, disks/whatever2, ... to properly benefit from caching

some Infos about how to use and benefit from cache mover in terms there are non standard Shares in use

and ONLY then, all Standard Share users wont need anything like this, just keep as is.

ahead as mentioned, cache mover itself doesnt care about your Shares and so on, this is just mandatory to benefit from the cached files when you are not using a standard Share Layout like /Media which is setup like cache primary >> array secondary.

when the file is "cached" and a copy resides on a cache SSD, we need to get the clients (Media Server, smb access, ...) to read the cached file instead the one on disk/s. So we need an alternative to the Standard Share Layout.

Here comes now the plugin mergerfs into the Game

image.png.18eefa4dc6b1f768b5b0951c4542f246.png

all credits to @Rysz and @trapexit to make this possible !!!

source: https://trapexit.github.io/mergerfs/

also to @AgentXXL for his Question about multi array support so i looked at this solution.

with this plugin we can create a "own" Media Share which included all the disks we want to use and set a priority

sample now

we have a Share on primary array only where our Media resides and want to use some UAD SSD disk as cache drive which doesnt belong to our regular Share setup. or the Share may even have a cache > array setup, but still we dont want to use the regular Cache as its working already alot.

1st step would be now to build our own Share, therefore we use mergerfs

sample lineup (important, the wanted cache must be 1st !!!, and sear=ff is found first)

mergerfs -o cache.files=off,dropcacheonclose=false,category.search=ff /mnt/disks/Samsung_SSD_950_PRO/Media:/mnt/disk1/Media:/mnt/disk2/Media /mnt/addons/mergerfs/Media

now we have a Share named /mnt/addons/mergerfs/Media for our access which will also always use a "cache disk" 1st ...

so, when cache mover did its job, and the clients using this Share instead, we have what we want.

Important is also now, your Media Server setup ... by default we all set them up to use our regular Shares, /mnt/user/Media as sample, this will not work properly if we want to benefit from cached files "outside" the Standard setup.

Why, once cache mover copy the file and switch, it will make use of it until you break the playback ... which can be as sample

longer pause ... while watching a movie (any client)

weird behaviour in playback ... Mediaserver like Jelly or Emby (specially remuxing)

next Episode ... "binge" watching a TV Show, next episode will start new file access

....

so, we need to tell our "clients" to also always look 1st on our cache device, therefore we need to switch the source, sample

(BEWARE TO SWITCH THIS >> can possible wipe your watchstates ... 1st, add the new Share, let it scan (creating dublettes), then remove the /mnt/user/... entries, let it scan again (remove the dublettes)...)

image.thumb.png.71ea75e56a48e2d12e185bf4311a1c8a.png

as we see, there is no more /mnt/user/Media ... Emby in this case following the upper setup Share we created with mergerfs, where our cache SSD (the USB UAD device) is set as 1st ...

so basically, we can now build whatever we want, either the simple case just described (external cache device) or multiply disks, arrays, whatever behind ...

all we always need is the one cache drive ahead in such a share to benefit, thats all we also need to tell cache mover where to copy from disk1, 2, 3, .. disks/whatever1, disks/whatever2, ... as target, the plugin now will watch all disk/s which are mounted and cache to the given device. in terms Mediaserver only mode it will only look when a running playback is active on the Mediaserver (mandatory for jelly and emby as noted before due strange file access behaviour).

like this we should be able now to cover all scenes ...

###

just as explenation why not just add all the extra disks seperate to the Mediaserver (was my 1st approach)

when i add the disks/Samsung_950 as sample as extra device into the Mediaserver, there 1 point to manage which is way more rude then the mergerfs approach.

the Mediaserver Plex as sample will find also the cached file, but will be added as "2nd" file ... so, it never will use the cache file 1st if we wouldnt then do the following procedure after cache mover did its job.

1/ remove the "original" out of Plex scope

2/ scan to get the cached file upper as 1st

3/ move the Original file back in scope

4/ scan again

5/ after cleaning scan again to remove missing entry ...

on Emby, Jelly its even worse (more a lottery) as they will create a sep. entry for the cached file, there

1/ scan library to not loose watchstate

2/ remove the "original" out of scope

3/ scan to get the cached file in library as only one

4/ keep it out of scope until the cleaner comes (keep hours ...)

5/ cleaner now starts

6/ move the original back in place

7/ scan to keep watch state

8/ remove the cached file

9/ scan again so the dublette entry gets away

so, nothing impossible, but not a nice way ... i asked if its possible to get a prio setted in the Media Servers somehow if there is a cached dublette file, seems currently not possible ... thats why i recommend the mergerfs way, easy and clean like a Standard Share setup which follows a 1st prio rule ....

i hope this makes it understandable, in terms of questions, feedback welcome ;)

Thanks for all the support. The issue with my radaarrr was due to plex. For soem reason when I had this pointed at my media folder it didnt allow radarr to save anything to it, but tv worked. When I changed to mnt/user it worked. I see this error do you know it may mean? IMG_2225.thumb.jpeg.e60db42a65bec9d07b95baf6844ca6e6.jpeg

are you on the current version ? i rewrote almost any parts ... just to make sure its still there on the latest version.

as its a error which occurs while playback, its nothing mandatory to the function, but i still would like to tear it down what ... if you are on the latest version let me know please, then i ll look for this "cosmetic" issue.

Yes I am on the latest, and could it because plex is noting to mnt/user rather then mnt/user/media?

I'd like to try the PWM-FANS. But it does not exists:

"/sys/devices/platform//hwmon//_enable", also with single backslashes.

What's the problem?

And if I'll will be able to getting the setup running, is it possible to get the hightest temperature from all disks to set the HD fans?

i always use the highest temp only, sample

disk1 - 40°

disk2 - 42°

this plugin will use 42° as adjustment point

may try this to take a look if you have capable devices

The newest Version don´t work at my system.

The last version with the source disk selection was working

I think i have mistake at the configuration but i don´t know

The only error message I get is when I set the media server mode to "only".

i leave a note here, sorry ... if you need a fallback, pm me

Is there any possibility to set it up? Normally the motherboard support pwm fans. It's an ASUS B650 Board. ASUS have there own Windows tool to set up the PWM-Fans.
