[Support] Linuxserver.io - OpenVPN AS

Recommended Posts

Hi, thanks for this. Is there a way to change the admin password through the docker webui or through the unraid webui?

Thanks again.

You change it via the OpenVPN-AS webui

Sorry, thats wrong. You can't change the admin password from the GUI AFAIK. As CHBMB noted the answer is in the link to the dockerhub on the first post of this thread. I have grabbed the specific area of that site and highlighted the important part in bold:

Setting up the application

The admin interface is available at https://<ip>:943 with a default user/password of admin/password.

To change the password (recommended) do

docker exec -it openvpn-as passwd admin

So you need to telnet to you server and type that command then follow the prompts to change the password. Then close the telnet session. Done.

Thanks. Yeah I saw the info on the dockerhub page. Was just interested to see if it was possible through the gui rather than text based command.

im having the same issue.

when trying to load the gui it i get 'page is not available". confirmed docker is set to Host. When i change it to bridge it does work :S.

I have tried removing and deleting the data, and confirmed its installed to /mnt/cache. still no go.

please help

Can you post a screenshot of your docker config and some logs...

Thanks but i worked out that issue. I had to add variable 'INTERFACE' to 'br0'.

I'm sorry for being such a Nub however, where did you add the variable 'INTERFACE' to 'br0"?

I assume this is to the Bridge Name?

I'm having trouble changing the admin password. I SSH into the server and do

docker exec -it openvpn-as passwd admin

but I keep getting

Error response from daemon: no such id: openvpn-as

I have tried using openvpnas instead of openvpn-as as well, but neither work

What is your container called and don't forget linux is case sensitive...

So I managed to make the password change without a problem, but then I made a few changes to my container settings and it updated the container. The admin password was then reset to the default and didn't remember the new password I had set

Is there a way to fix this? I don't want to have to change the admin password everytime the container receives an update

/config --> /mnt/cache/appdata/openvpn-as

Thats the only mapping I have. Env variables (group and user ID) left as default

After I changed the admin password, I went in and changed the webUI port number in the container config and that was what reset the admin password back to `password`

Link to comment

If you mean within OVPN-AS settings, then TCP and UDP are standard, but admin UI port has been changed to 9431

If you mean within the container for the docker, then there is no section for port mappings at all. When I talk about the webUI port number in container config, I'm talking about the 'webui' field within 'additional fields'. By default that is set to https://[iP]:[PORT:943]/, but I changed it to 9431 so I can access the UI from within unraid

How do I use a paid for service such as PIA or IP-Vanish in this container?

This is not a VPN Client it is a VPN Server.

This docker is like the IPVanish Service you are trying to connect to but your own server and connection. This is not going to mask your privacy like the VPN services you quote as any client connection you make will essentially route the connection via the ISP your server is sat behind. Unless of course your router (which manages your ISP connection) is configured to route all traffic via a VPN Service like the one you want.

What are you actually trying to acheive?

Link to comment

I was trying to use it as a server for my VPN service so if I connected to it I would be connected to my VPN i.e PIA I also wanted to use it so I could connect my server to my VPN so all my downloads are safe.

You can't use this for that directly. Not sure what you mean by "safe". Most services (e.g. gmail, Microsoft etc) allow connections over https which means client to server the downloads are encrypted.

Anyway - to do what I think you want - the easiest way is to run a vpn client on your router. To route all traffic and be truly private you will need a router with a fair bit of kick and have your configuration well and truly sorted (e.g. to prevent dns leaks etc).

Alternatively - if you use a specific protocol like torrents - you can just search "vpn" in Community Applications Plugin on v6.x.

Community Applications: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=40262.0

This plugin will allow you to easily search for and add any of the unRaid docker or plugin applications.

A tab then appears on your server called "Apps" and via that tab you can search for the following:

Torrent: binhex - DelugeVPN: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=45812.0

NZB #1: binhex-sabnzbdvpn: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=45822.0

This is more of a general docker/unraid question but since it is this docker specifically that I have this question about I'll ask it here.

I've found that with the path being /mint/cache/appdata that my mover doesn't appear to run.  I assumed I needed to set the properties to use cache only but I found that /appdata isn't a share other than on the cache drive.

I've reviewed the openvpn-as notes and found nothing. Should I create a share for openvpn-as, assign it as cache only then install the docker using that path for the config?

Thanks!

Hi all, let me apologize in advance if I come across as a total noob here. I've installed OpenVPN-AS on my Unraid 6 server in order to access Plex, Calibre Content Server, and Muximux. I was able to log in to the GUI fine after changing the admin password via a telnet session. However, I'm pretty confused about where to go from here. I've read all of the Quick Start guide and have tried to follow those instructions and the ones in the How To section, but I admit I'm a bit lost.

What I've done so far is as follows:

1. Installed the docker using the linuxserver.io template and set the config location to /mnt/cache/appdata/openvpn

2. Reset the admin password via telnet.

3. Created another guest user and assigned a password

4. Forwarded ports 943 and 9443 (TCP), and 1194 (UDP) on my router

5. Login to OpenVPN-AS admin page

6. Set my DDNS forwarding address from my router in the Server Network Settings (from No-IP)

7. Added 192.168.1.0/24 in the VPN Settings

The OpenVPN server seems to be running find on server side - I can access it from other devices on my network via http://192.168.1.107:943 and http://xxx.ddns.net:943. But when I try to log in with a client app on my phone (iOS) or via the web login page (xxx.ddns.net:943) when I am not connected to my home network the connection times out. This happens whether I try to login with Admin or the additional user I created.

My first question is, should I change anything under the VPN settings? They are all default at the moment.  The Dynamic IP Address Network address is set to 172.27.224.0 with 20 bits in the netmask. Should I change this to 192.168.1.0/24? Or does it not matter? Also, I have the routing set so that VPN clients can access 172.17.0.0/16 and 192.168.1.0/24. Is this correct?

Second, do I need to change the server network settings? Specifically my interface? I have the following options:

br0: 192.168.1.107

docker0: 172.17.42.1

eth0: 192.168.1.107

vetha5b6eed: 172.17.42.1

Lastly authentication is set as PAM at the moment. Is this correct?

Thanks very much for the help!

Firstly I wouldn't be opening ports up on my router until my configuration was complete. I also wouldn't be exposing my Admin/Connect web pages to the internet.

In the main, default settings for this Docker Container are fine. It works pretty much as is once you understand that minimal playing is required and what everything does.

Here is what I did:

- Installed OpenVPN-AS Docker.

- Changed Admin Password

- Created New User

- Changed New User Password

- Log into Admin Web GUI on port 943 using admin credentials

- Selected Server Network Settings

- Changed Hostname to my domain name (this is optional - I connect via a domain name not an IP Address and I want to to be reflected in the certificate files when they get generated).

- Changed Protocol to UDP only

- Changed UDP port to 1194

- UnderClient Web Server I checked Use the same address and port as the Admin Web Server (This means that the Admin and Connect UI's are accessible from the same port)

- Save Settings

- Goto User Permissions

- Create a new user to match the one that you created earlier on the Command Line

- Check Admin (If you want to BUT there is no reason why not - you're not going to allow access to the Admin or Connect GUI's outside the LAN anyway)

- Check Allow Auto-Login

- Check Require user permissions record for VPN access

- Save Settings

- Click Apply on Server (if the option appears - and it should)

- Logout of Admin Web GUI

- Log into Connect Web GUI on port 943 using your new user credentials

- Click Connection profiles can be downloaded for: Yourself (user-locked profile) link

- A .ovpn (containing required certificates to securely auto login from a client) file will be downloaded to your PC

- Log out of Connect Web GUI

This is what I did to enable the Profile on my iPhone:

- E-mailed the .ovpn to a secure email account accessible on my iPhone

- Installed the OPenVPN iPhone app from the App Store

- Went into my e-mail client and opened the .ovpn file with the newly installed OpenVPN iPhone app

- When the file opens it prompts you to save the config. Click Yes.

- Deleted .ovpn file from my email client (and server) and saved a copy of it on my Array for using later.

On OSX the procedure is similar except you can use a nice program called Tunnelblick from the App Store.

Once things are loaded, then:

- Open your router (no need for opening another ports if you have followed my instructions) Web GUI and Open and forward port 1194 to your unRAID Server.

- Try and Login from one of your clients. If all is well, and the few times I have set this up it has been - your VPN connection will start up and you can access your LAN side machines as if your were on the LAN itself.

Note: You can log in from any and as many clients as you like. The license is per user NOT per connection.

I'm taking a guess that it is this:

vulf.ddns.net:1194 (192.168.0.10)

It is trying to connect to a LAN IP address.  Try and disconnecting your Phone from the Wireless to being with and then trying lofting in via 3G/4G.

Interestingly I just tried to ping vulf.ddns.net and it could not resolve the host.

As a means of debugging you could just create a profile with your external IP address and see if at least it works with that.

Yeah, interestingly, I was trying to access the server via 3G when this error message came up. I think there might be a problem with my No-IP redirecter, but I'm not sure how to fix that.

So, one thing I've realized is that no-ip's dynamic name redirect isn't working because I don't have their Dynamic Update Client running on my Unraid machine. I've tried to follow the instructions here: http://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/installing-the-linux-dynamic-update-client/ but I'm running into a problem because unraid doesn't have the make tool install, so I can't install the DUC software.... I'm not sure if this is the source of the main problem I'm facing with OpenVPN, but I figure I can't isolate the other problems until I sort this out. How are other folks dealing with redirecting a host to your OpenVPN login? Thanks!
