May 19, 201313 yr Good I am ordering a 4 tb seagate for parity and cash/hot spare. Truly don't need the room but I want to go to this bigger drive size and see how it will work. Also heard very good things about the speed and performance so I want to see how this new version of 5 will handle the drives. Note that replacing your parity drive with a 4TB unit isn't going to speed things up, but it will let you start using 4TB data drives ... A 4TB cache drive would most likely be faster than your current cache disk; but that's certainly a larger drive than you need for that !!
May 20, 201313 yr I know but I don't have enough for 3 drives. I always like having a drive same size as my parity my cash so if it were to fail or another fails I know I have a running spare ready for action, and if it fails that is ok I don't have to run to a store. It gives me piece of mind.
May 23, 201313 yr Has anybody got any idea what is happening. After a veeeeery long time of no news V5 looked to be imminent for final release now we are in another period of nothing to report, even the forums have gone quiet.
May 23, 201313 yr Has anybody got any idea what is happening. After a veeeeery long time of no news V5 looked to be imminent for final release now we are in another period of nothing to report, even the forums have gone quiet. As you've noted, we've had no status updates, so there's no way to know for sure. What IS true is that the new UnRAID site is taking pre-orders for the new server, and indicates "... We expect to ship pre-ordered servers by June 1." Since that server will include v5, it's at least a reasonable assumption that v5 will be out by 1 June ... of course either of the following could also be true: (a) the servers won't be shipped by their promised date; or (b) the servers will be delivered with the latest Release Candidate software, with a promise to send the "final" upgrade as soon as it's available
May 23, 201313 yr Is there anything special I need to do to go from rc12 to rc12a? At least I think I'm using rc12 on my second unRAID. I guess I need to double check.
May 23, 201313 yr The download says file not found. Is there a new link to rc12a? You should be able to get to it here.
May 24, 201313 yr First post has not been updated with the new links after the new website went live after the hacking that is all not the end of the world.
May 24, 201313 yr i might just be moving to flexraid..... this is getting kinda ridiculous Agree. I looked at flex a while ago and then settled on unraid due to - somewhat ironically - the support looked better.

I looked at flex a while ago and then settled on unraid due to - somewhat ironically - the support looked better. I suppose that's somewhat a matter of your viewpoint. Support for UnRAID is actually quite good -- on this forum ! In addition, LimeTech is very good at servicing key requests and key replacements for damaged USB flash units. The DEVELOPMENT process certainly leaves a lot to be desired; but many of the issues (perhaps most) aren't actually related to core UnRAID, but to the add-ons and plug-ins that folks want to add to their server simply because they can (it is, after all, a Linux PC). If you buy a NAS appliance, you typically don't try to add all this stuff to it -- you just use it for the storage it's designed to provide. In many ways, UnRAID is really designed to simply be a more-flexible "do-it-yourself" NAS appliance that allows you to mix drives of various sizes and even different interfaces (IDE, SATA, SCSI). But many folks try to go well beyond that -- and that's often what causes issue => but this forum provides a LOT of good support for those modifications.
May 24, 201313 yr i might just be moving to flexraid..... this is getting kinda ridiculous Bye!!!!! You get into other trouble there.
May 25, 201313 yr Agree. I looked at flex a while ago and then settled on unraid due to - somewhat ironically - the support looked better. I just took a look out of interest, and there are a lot of unanswered support questions on their forums. It's a flexible product, but isn't supported by Win8 it seems. I'm pretty happy with unraid, it does what I want so far and it's pretty maintenance free. The only reason I would like to see 5 go final is so that all the very helpful people making plugins can agree on a standard for them to be implemented. It seems a bit hit and miss at the moment, and a few like SNAP seem to be holding off developing until a final release is out. The releases keep chopping and changing to many things and it's making work for plugin developers. I'm also interested in buying unraid, I'm currently on the free 3 drive version, but at the moment I'm holding off until it's a final release is confirmed, and released. At the moment it does what I want it to do, but my concern is that if plugin developers get frustrated and move on, then I'll have to find something else too so that I can run my extra applications I want to offload to a server. Edit: RC12 has been running on my machine since it came out and I've had zero issues so far!
May 26, 201313 yr I am using 5.0rc12 as well without problems. Even "survived" a failed HD without data loss. But: It's a beta (even if named as rc): - No support for 3TB drivies in any official unraid version - No can not use any addons in 5.xx (if you follow unraid instructions) - No never know, which addons are compatible to which rc version - So its time to stop adding functions, changing kernels, fix the lates bugs and release it Thica
May 27, 201313 yr I'm running 12a, and I noticed last week how much harder it is now to remove a drive from the array (I had an empty drive so figured I'd re-purpose it as a cache). I don't know whether the wiki has been updated since - I can't find the guide I used - but it's worth noting that you need to take a note of all your disc assignments (especially the parity drive), since you'll need to assign them all again (and hope that you've not turned a data drive into a parity by mistake). Anyway, can I just confirm that there is no option to password protect the web interface? If so, it seems a bit of a security vulnerability; you can now get to all files through the browser. I might have misunderstood some of the share settings though.
May 27, 201313 yr You can require a password for the Web GUI by setting a password for the root user account. This can be found on the users page of the Web GUI. Hope this helps :-) Sent from my GT-I9100P using Tapatalk 4 Beta

May 27, 201313 yr It's only been 2 weeks since limetech has posted anything.. I can't tell if you're sarcastic but I'm very ready for Tom's next post to be the release of 5
May 27, 201313 yr It's only been 2 weeks since limetech has posted anything.. I can't tell if you're sarcastic but I'm very ready for Tom's next post to be the release of 5 +1 ... and I expect that will indeed be the case.
May 27, 201313 yr Limtech can you update with status of 5 FINAL? In case you haven't noticed, status updates are not one of Tom's "things" ... but I'm sure he's diligently working on this, and in the not-too-distant future will post an announcement with the v5 release
May 28, 201313 yr Release it live with a new kernel, new btrfs addition and possibly 64bit without going beta or RC ? Scarey
May 28, 201313 yr Limetech's biggest failing isn't anything to with the product, it's clear consistent communication. We get short periods of good support and feedback about product development and then months of nothing. I have no doubt that Tom is working hard in the background. But, Unraid users and potential users rely heavily on our forums for answers to their questions. When none of our Forum veteran's and expert users seem to know the product direction it does not bode well. The second thing I would change (that has caused significant frustration) is the release schedule,The bottom line is that it needs to be more regular and more predictable. As great as some of these shiny new features may be I don't want them if it means being in a perpetual Beta/RC cycle. I expect that many will be placated when R5 final comes out but let's not fall back into the cycle of delight to disappointment. I know this can be addressed through improved communication and better release management. Limetech's incentive for doing this better is organic business growth through word of mouth. It not the technically superior product that achieves the best commercial success it the one with the best overall reputation. For many that reputation can be damaged with a low score card on the above issues. I remain optimistic that this can change for the better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
