How much RAM do you have installed in your unRAID server?

128 gb.

Was running 16gb before, but it wasn't coping with Elasticsearch, whilst running media, etc.

128gb is overkill and I think 64 would be ample for most things.

I don't think 128 GB is overkill if you end up running a whole bunch of VMS or even a few VMS

Lots of RAM is never a problem haha

32GB DDR4 ECC. Rarely do I go above 70% usage but I don't run as many VM's as I use too. If I ever start up again, it will be back to 64GB.

Too quote CanOn, "Lots of RAM is never a problem" for me either!

I don't disagree, but I think if you're running a daily unRaid, 64GB is comfortable. I went the best of what I could get at the time, because I don't want to build another for a while.

128GB DDR3 1333 Reg ECC (4x32)

64GB DDR4 non-ECC on my old server, 256GB DDR3 1600MHz ECC on the new server.

Running on an old HP Z820, way overkill for a home media server with a few docker containers and VM's but hey ho, we do like to play don't we.

Hey!!  I have the older brother to your toy!  My Z800 is max'd out with 96GB (12x 8GB ECC) for its dual x5690 Xeons.  Yeh, it's a bit overkill, but it's also no slouch in processing power.

32Gb idk if needed, but i have 😂

32Gb.

Got a good deal on 8Gb ddr4 sticks on ebay.

64GB DDR4-3600

With 32GB I always had around 85% utilisation minimum and was restricted..

64GB

64GB, with two sticks. I'm using an old supermicro board (x9dre-tf+) that's compatible with LRDIMM ecc modules, so I decided to go with some IBM 1066MHz 32gb LRDIMMs, since they were cheap and some people on another forum said they'd work with my board. $34 a piece. I wanted to do some virtualization with my box, but haven't done any yet. A little bit overkill for the moment being.

32gb ddr4

Interesting.  Saw 40GB and my brain went "wait, what?"

Dual channel I assume since you're using 2x pairs? Same model, just a different size?

32GB dual channel, non-ECC (hope to switch to ECC soon as I'm about to flip to ZFS)

Here is my full component list:

Completed Builds - PCPartPicker

And yes yes, I know, I don't need an AIO for this setup. But I hadn't installed one before and I had the scratch available.

If this rig is running unattended I highly recommend upgrading to a normal CPU cooler that doesn't rely on pumping liquid to keep the CPU from overheating. The worst that happens when a normal heatsink and fan combo quits is slightly elevated temperatures, slowly ramping up as the convection air keeps passing over the heavy block of copper and aluminum fins, and the system fans that are still running keep the box from melting down.

Worst case scenario with liquid cooling is ruined circuit boards below where the liquid leaked accompanied by a rapid overheating.

Desktop gaming rigs that are always within reach are great for liquid cooling, servers not so much.

Very excellent point. The server is actually within reach, but of course it is also always on and I'm not always at home.

I did slyly purchase this setup with the intent of turning it into a gaming rig and grabbing a Rosewill chassis or whatever and moving my server duties to that. I built the system in 2020 and the last component I was missing was a GPU. Well, Etherium put a stop to those plans.

I did have an M60 available from work that I used up until 6 months ago for vGPU duties but ... eww. Maxwell.  It got the job done though for vGPU passthrough for my needs, which mostly consisted of either Plex transcoding (I've since flipped to QuickSync from Intel) or a VM running a desktop so my daughter could play Roblox / Minecraft / whatever remotely using Parsec. And Maxwell was the last generation of GRID GPU that didn't require a license server. That all started with Pascal and continues on with Turing, Ampere and now (I assume) Lovelace.

Now, however, E-VGA GeForce GPUs are about to go on a firesale so maybe I can continue with those plans - albeit 2.5 years later. I already have my half-height rack in my checkout box on Amazon but I'm still struggling with a case that meets my needs.
