unRAID Server Release 6.0.1-x86_64 Available

Just a quick post to say congratulations to the Limetech Team. I have been using unraid5 free version for some time as my storage needs were light, I then built a Windows server to take more advantage of my hardware and because I've not got the time to learn Linux at any kind of advanced level.

I've been testing unRAID 6 for about a week and it has so far exceeded my expectations by a large margin. You have provided enough documentation and simplified the interface so much that I can now get somewhere with everything I try and with an hour or so extra effort seem to be able to crack it. I've got a VM working with GPU, Sound and USB pass through and two dockers running alongside. I am pretty much 100% converted!

We, the whole team, really appreciate your feedback.  We know there are still lots of rough edges (and sharp edges and missing edges), but sometimes wonder if we're heading the right direction...  thanks!

So every time my server gets shutdown with the UPS during a power outage, unRAID gets shutdown dirty and starts up with a parity check... It didn't used to happen with the old plugin that we had to install ourselves.  I have the powerdown plugin installed but it didn't save a syslog to my flash drive during the shutdown. I have attached diagnostics. Can someone tell me why this is happening?

As best as I can tell, power was cut before it received a shutdown notification.  Check your UPS settings and configuration.

You might also want to check the battery in your UPS as well as the 'Time on battery before shutdown ' setting.  I really don't have much faith in the 'Runtime Left' display on the UPSsettings page.    As the battery nears it end-of-life and the internal resistance increases, the available battery output voltage may drop to the point where the internal protection circuitry will cut the power!

I received a notification from unRAID that the system was on battery, then 2 mins later I received a notification that it was shutting down. The UPS is 3 years old know so it's nearing its end of life. That said yesterday I changed to UPS settings to shut down the server more quickly. I suppose I could try setting it for an even shorter time.

Another question, with the old ups plugin "nominal power" and "UPS load" used to show values. With the built in version it has only shown those values durning one middle 6 beta (I forget which one). That's why I was wondering if maybe my UPS didn't have the appropriate driver?

Since we don't have the log from the apcupsd-initiated shutdown, there is little information to go on.  Yes, apcupsd is started and the powerdown plugin is loaded.  I don't see the apcupsd configuration in the diagnostics.

Try invoking powerdown from the console (or a terminal session) and see what happens.  That should result in a clean shutdown without the ups being involved.  Note how long it takes until the server powers down.

Apcupsd/powerdown definitely works - it gets tested two or three times a day here in Philippines.

Typing powerdown from the console does a clean shutdown. It does take a few minutes to shutdown. I suppose there is a good possibility that the battery does before everything has had a chance to shutdown. Thanks for your input, just wanted someone to take a second look to make sure everything was loading properly. I suppose it is about time I start looking in a replacement battery or new unit all together.

I recently replaced my battery and it was far cheaper and easier to find that replacing the whole unit.

As it happens my unit was only 2 years old and comes with a 3 year warrenty. APC just issued me a replacement battery  ;D

I'll probably get booed out of the room, but I do not use a UPS. I do use a surge protector, and the power to my home is pretty stable. We lose power maybe 2 times a year. When I bought my UPS, an APC fairly high capacity one, not knowing much about them, I assumed it would be a long term investment, but after protecting me from 1 or 2 outages, it started to give trouble. It was just out of warranty and the batteries were expensive. I couldn't justify it based on the number of times it kicked in, plus the insignificant effort of doing the parity check. I've probably had 5 or 6 power failures since that time and all have recovered fine. In fact there was a storm 2 days ago, power flickered, and server went down. I booted, parity check kicked off, and it as done mid-next day. No parity errors.

Not saying UPS is not a good idea for peace of mind and especially if you are in a place that loses power a lot. But it is a high maintenance item that may not be necessary for everyone.

This discussion has reminded me/pointed out that my UPS batteries are at the end of their life (about 6 years old).

I just looked for APC batteries, and they are about $70.  Other brands can be had for about 1/2 that amount.

Since I do have the UPS already, I'll probably invest in new batteries, since it has kept my server from shutting off several times in the last 6 years.  Even with the APC batteries, that works out to less than $1/month.  Seems like a decent investment to me.

APC batteries are cheap, nasty Chinese things with an APC label and hefty markup.

I replaced my APC batteries with Lucas ones I get from a local wheelchair repair company.  The Lucas batteries last much, much longer in my experience, both in run time and longevity.  They're also a quarter the price.

But don't you risk that your UPS might drive off then?  ;D

It won't get far, it's upstairs. :)

Cheap and nasty, maybe.  However, the last time I purchased a genuine replacement APC battery, it cost me the equivalent of GBP13 or USD20.  Perhaps they are more affordable here because of the sizeable demand - every cash till and security gate in the malls has an APC UPS on it!

Genuine APC batteries in the UK are about £70, plus maybe £20 carriage.  It's cheaper to buy a new UPS than fix an old one.

I paid £20 for the two wheelchair batteries I needed for my old SmartUPS 750.

are your Smartups 750 working well with unRAID apcupsd?

i have the same model, but a few variables are missing, like temperature, voltage...

this maybe esxi related, i'm not sure..

Well, I guess that does go to prove that the APC batteries are overpriced in the UK.  The price I paid (PHP950) was retail here, but  I have a contact who was working for Schneider APC and he said that he could have obtained the battery for me at PHP750 - just over GBP10.

It works in that it shuts the server down when required.  I don't think the temps, voltage etc work either.  I wasn't too fussed, I just assumed it was due to the age of my unit (one of the very first LCD/USB ones).

mine are very old too - usb but without LCD (2006 year may be), i got it used for free, replaced batteries and it just works.

i have a setup with APCUPSD on Windows VM, and all values are displayed ok, Linux VMs are missing some values..

I have had VERY good luck with Chrome Batteries. You can buy them on either Amazon or eBay.  They last just as long as the APC branded ones...which others have said, just have a sticker over the chinese writing.

I assume this is a known, low priority, bug?

Also I should mention that cache pooling PCIE flash storage is the bees knees!  I'm maxing out my desktops 1G connection when copying files, Thank You!

To be on the safe side, you could add which browser(s) you experience this on, and if it is something new in this release :)

Sweet!

Maxing out 1G writing to the cache is not so though, though. Any decent traditional hard drive in the cache is plenty enough for that with sequential writes... Not so much for concurrent I/O of course, horrible task for spinners :)

I am running 6.0.1 on my main server. 15 data drives installed. I am doing some drive upgrades and adding some drives often. (Eventually I will remove the old disks and rebuild parity, but for now the array is just getting bigger.) A few weeks ago I added a 5T drive to my array and don't remember having any trouble. Maybe that was with 6.0.0. Today I was trying to add a precleared drive to the array. None of the little dropdown arrows next to the slots worked.

I tried a number of things like refresh, switching between tabs, starting and stopping array. Nothing helped. I was finally able to get the drop downs to work by pressing the Help button to engage help mode.

I am using Firefox.
