[PLUGIN] ZFS Master

Featured Replies

Short answer: You need to escape the "-" in your pattern so that it will be "/docker%-old/.*".

Long Answer: The plugin doesn't use regex, but Lua patterns, which are slightly different (https://www.lua.org/pil/20.2.html).

Is this plugin still needed for Unraid 7.0.0 if I want to be able to take snapshots in the GUI?

Afaik yes, there is no option to make snapshots in the GUI by default.

I've noticed a discrepancy in capacity stats between Unraid and ZFS Master.

One of my cache pools (2 drive mirrored ZFS) is reporting 483GB capacity. ZFS Master is reporting 464GB. The Capacity used is also reported differently as 409GB in UR and 381GB in ZFS Master.

Exploring the dataset from ZFS Master and calculating the capacity used reports 409GB

I'm not sure who would own the issue, whether that's UR or the ZFS Master.

I think that they are the same value but one is in GB and the other in GiB (I.e. decimal)

I'm not sure if this occured before or after I upgraded to Unraid 7 (from 7rc1), but on my app (docker) drive, I see this in the ZFS Master gui:

image.thumb.png.f41592a4daa0ffa433867beded0a60d2.png

when I open terminal I can't find these anywhere.   What are they?   How can I delete them in bulk?

EDIT:

it looks like something from docker...
`mount` shows

EDIT:  I guess I solved it, hid in the zfs master settings:

Hi @aglyons I just added a specific section in the first post of this thread to clarify how used/free space is calculate and why there are some discrepancies.

For your particular case @novaleaf, and as you are already using Unraid 7, you can check the the following post for using the overlay2 driver and get rid of the legacy datasets completely, that change alone speeds up the zfs listing operations quite a bit.

There is a new update with the following changelog:

2024.12.08

  • Add - Config for pulling ZnapZend plans
  • Fix - Refresh and settings icon
  • Fix - Corner case if no information is loaded

By default, ZnapZend integration is not active; this should fix some performance issues reported; if you still encounter issues even with the integration disabled, please report the problems in this thread.

Yesterday tested znapzend for the first time and really liked it, even much more than Sanoid/Syncoid. Just get 3 files and use them (znapzendzetup, znapzend, znapzendztatz).

I don`t know what exactly you use in your plugin, but would be great to add support znapzendzetup and znapzend (just 2 small bin files):

znapzendzetup - just edit, disable, delete and create plan and no more else, maybe simple text dialog? Would be awesome to have it in Zfs master plugin.

znapzend - maybe for fast execution, or maybe znapzendzetup would be enough.

znapzend --recursive --autoCreation --runonce=pool/dataset

Just my thoughts.

Honestly, it will be best tool ever for Unrain if it supports replication with schedule, send/receive and removing old snapshots by policy, need to add znapzend itself and simple dialog for edit plan.

Hi @d3m3zs I'm a little bit reluctant to include ZnapZend binaries in the plugin, mainly because there is already a ZnapZend plugin on the CA, and you can also install it using docker(Probably I will submit a docker template for that in the future).

My idea is to start working in the upcoming weeks on the feature for creating backup plans from the GUI (As today you can only read them) so you can create and review the backup plans using ZFS Master, but the ZnapZend docker or CA plugin executes them.

Thanks for your reply!

I checked plugin ZnapZend, it includes old version, much better to download lastest from repo.

update to 0.21.2 but on github already 0.23.2.

Also plugin does nothing, except add znapzend to system, no GUI and no any interface.

If you add znapzend - everything will be in one place.

You can ask the maintainer to update it to the latest version. What the plugin does is to provide the binary and daemonize it, so it can work on the background executing the backup plans. ZnapZend doesn't have a GUI or any other interface besides the CLI tool natively. My intention is to provide "some" GUI for defining and reviewing backup plans, then, the demon should execute on the defined schedules.

I understand, thank you. It is almost the same what I asked, will be happy to have it.

a bit new to ZFS here, I recently formatted my pool to ZFS and using mirror with two 1TB nvmes, but when i click actions using this plugin, the only option i see is to move/rename, nothing about snapshots. Am i missing a setting somewhere?

Hi John, I have the impression that you created a folder instead of a dataset, and that's the reason you can only perform a limited set of actions.

Edit: Sorry I know it's not quite on topic for this plugin but I second buidling it into zfsmaster so it has a way to setup recursive and pruning all in one place.

How did you compile it for unraid? Do you not have to? I tried downloading the binaries but I get some error about "Mojo" missing or something.

Download https://github.com/oetiker/znapzend/releases/download/v0.23.2/znapzend-0.23.2.tar.gz

Unpack, go to folder "bin" and you will find all 3 files. Copy them to any place and use, of course according to place where you put them will be diff command to execute. Or paste them to /usr/local/bin to be able run without path, but need to write simple cp script to do this every boot.

Create script to run during every Array starts:

/HERE_IS_YOUR_PATH/znapzend --daemonize --pidfile=/var/run/znapzend.pid

Yeah I tried that and was presented with this error when tring to run znapzendzetup create

i didn't consider that formatting my cache as ZFS wouldn't automatically create a dataset for at least for the top level as a whole. Do datasets need to be created manually for, or what's the process for working with them?

It does appear datasets have to be manually created. You can use zfs master to convert folders into datasets.

SpaceInvader also has a script that will do it for you but I don't personally use it.

These 3 files

Then

#ZFS snapshots
cp -rf "$source_dir"znapzend/ /usr/local/bin/

chmod +x /usr/local/bin/znapzend
chmod +x /usr/local/bin/znapzendzetup
chmod +x /usr/local/bin/znapzendztatz

#Run znapzend service
znapzend --logto=/var/log/znapzend.log --daemonize
# Check if znapzend is running
pgrep znapzend > /dev/null
if [[ $? -ne 0 ]]; then
/usr/local/emhttp/webGui/scripts/notify -i warning -s "znapzend is not running"
fi

If plugin will be updated - fine, but don`t expect and don`t need it.

Also, you can take a look at Sanoid for snapshots and replicas, it is even easier, only one config and plugin updated. Also author of both plugins is the same eprson and he (or she) mentioned that switched to Sanoid.

that makes sense, thanks.

if you don't mind my asking, why don't you use SpaceInvader's script?

also, what's recommended to keep and not keep datasets for? I assume it'd be useful to convert certain folders to datasets for folders like appdata since they are containers, but what about folders like domains or system?

I don't use it because I manually create the datasets I need when needed. Im not doing it often enough to require a script to do it for me.

what's the process to convert a directory into a dataset? is it simply to hit "Create Dataset" and input the exact name of the directory?

i don't see details on this on the first post, only notes about what the process entails on the back end while it's happening.

You just click on the "Convert to Dataset" button.

see, that's what's weird, i don't see those options, only move/rename.

I noticed your folders are blue though, while mine are gray. is your root folder above those (rclone in your example), also a dataset? is that what i'm missing?image.thumb.png.6ac9429fa9ea5d80d72c3d13f7b30125.png
