If its been months, why don't you just restore a backup of your MariaDB and your NC dockers to when they were last working?? That's the quickest way and then revert for advice, before you do any further upgrades.

I cannot underline enough how important it is to have decent backups to resolve issues quickly. I only troubleshoot when I absolutely have to.

The problem with your error, it could be a number of things. Anything from your MariaDB version being out of date and NC having the :latest tag and auto updating could be sufficient for that to happen.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I did try to revert to earlier backups, but they all suffer the same problem. I need to troubleshoot.

After tinkering with this for a while, it seems the solution is much simpler than I thought. For some reason, the only step required is to modify the config.php file. No need to install ffmp

Can you post the following as quotes:

  1. Directory of your config folder
  2. Contents of your config folder. (Remember to anonymise).
  3. Docker config for your MariaDB and Nextcloud.

To get support you need to post at least the basics.

Thank you very much for the reply and the help.

I am a little lost regarding the info you are requesting, so before I send you a bunch of stuff you didn't ask for, can you please clarify what you are asking for.

1. Directory of your config folder.

2. Contents of your config folder.

I don't understand what the difference between these two is.
Are you asking for a directory listing of my MariaDB appdata folder? What else do you need?

3. Docker config for your MariaDB and Nextcloud.

I can't figure out for the life of me how to get a text listing of my docker configs. I know when I created (and update) a docker container, the text file is displayed, but how can I get that same text manually?

Sorry that I appear quite helpless. And thanks again for the offer of help.

I wrote this quite quickly, for 2. What I meant is to post the contents of your config.php file (remember to xxxx out parts that identify the server, ie. web address, password hash, etc.

Post contents of docker config:

1. Click on the docker, like Nextcloud.

2. Select Edit.

3. Take a snapshot of the config and post it.

I wrote this a while ago, so I'll need to go back and see what you're issue is. I'm on a course and kid's holidays start, so I may not respond this weekend.

Do you mind posting a step by step? I have been having a nightmare with this. Cant really figure out how to use adminer to get this sorted either. Thanks

Open Adminer

Log into the appropriate DB

Click SQL Command on the left hand side of the page

Copy and paste the command from original post and click execute

I did it a while ago, so this is all from memory

It's ok m8. I got this sorted using the console on the container. Bit of a pain but at least its sorted now!

Is anyone having issues with the GUI this morning? Everything worked last night, but this morning I can not get into the WebUI. I think my MariaDB updated last night, but would that mess with the GUI?

You haven't provided sufficient information for the community to assist with this, ie. No logs, no screenshots. I've mentioned repeatedly on this forum, that leaving your MariaDB and / or Nextcloud to auto update the docker will likely lead to these scenarios.

Sorry I figured it out. For some reason I was having internal proxy issues. I meant to come back with more information.

Hey Buddy,

Definitely no need to apologise to anybody. I was just explaining that it's difficult to answer the question with no info. Glad you got it sorted.

It's been a long time since I updated nextcloud and I can see that things have changed. Inside the nextcloud server page where I would go to update it tells me to use the command line to upgrade at this point. I have followed the instructions on how to do that but it is not updating. How do I bring myself from version Nextcloud Hub 7 (28.0.2) to the current version?

  • 2 weeks later...

@cosmicrelish , Almost in the same boat... I am on 27.0.2. Last time i updated to 27.0.2 from a lower version , it totally went sideways and had to reinstall , reupload everything. I have now set the version fixed to prevent any auto-updates. Now my backups at almost 2TB. I have all folders neatly created , i dont want to mess things up. The system is working just fine , but at the same time , i dont want to be behind the main version too far.

someone please help me figure out the best way to upgrade to latest version , without breaking things.

I really wish updating nextcloud was refined , rather than becoming too tiresome and problematic.

The update method that was used by this container wasn't great, that was fixed a year-ish ago but since you're so far back it will be a pain.

Basically need to find the latest 27 container version, move your tag to that, update NC, then find the latest 28 version, update NC, repeat until current. The last couple will update NC themselves instead of needing you to do it from the webui/CLI for the older ones.

Make a full backup of data/db/appdata of course.

data for container alone ? or you are saying the 2TB of my data ? I dont have any resource to even copy them elsewhere.

app data and db are ok.. they might be small , data here refers to which one ?

Well appdata and DB are the ones that matter for the migration... but to me any data should always have at least one backup unless it's competely disposable and unimportant.

, is it simply possible to uninstall nextcloud and reinstall and load backup config(if thats even possible) so that these upgrades wont mess with my data and if i uninstall and reinstalll a new version , it will simply able to bring the old "data" and config to current state ?

If not , does simply renaming the folder will help ?

I tried this a while back, if I was in your shoes and I had to do it again I would do this the following way:

Make a copy of your data, place it somewhere else. Download a fresh install, reference the same DB locations and file paths you need for your nextcloud to function properly. And see if it works.

I went through pulling my hair out going through the same process of you. And I screwed it up, by not backing up everything properly, and not checking if nextcloud was 100% functional.

No. Nextcloud cannot take any configuration from more than one version back, hence requiring you to go through 27-28-29-30-31 in steps.

You could start fresh and point it to the the data files but you'd lose anything else (history, versions, settings, what's stored in apps like contacts / calendar etc).

Yeah I do co-sign the above.... Don't be lazy and screw up your working install like I did lol

@Kilrah @Mrtj18 Thanks for your advices ..

Backing up almost 5.5TB will take me years , since most are photos and will take so much time.. If it was simply movie files , trasnfer to ext hdd will be fast.

So i have two options , in both options i have to backup my data .. one option is hop through multiple version and hope i see the light at the end of tunnel , second is erase the path and pray you draw the same path for the DB to work properly.. :(

I always wanted to have a backup to cloud.. was looking into those cold storages or pay onen time ones .. is it possible i can lin to nextcloud and upload them there ?

Also after doing all these , is the new version of NC has resolved this tedious way of upgrading ?

I can confirm the updated version of nextcloud, you only have to update it, from the community apps section like all other apps. No more going into the container itself to update.

I personally don't have a off site backup of nextcloud, just a backup of it's appdata and network shared folder files on a separate USB drive.

I am afraid to do anything .. Also i need loads of time to move the data with most of them being pictures IS it possible i can move them to different place on my hdd ?

Why would you move it, when you can just rename the folder?

I've only briefed through this, so some of it may be assumption. I've pulled back from responding on this thread as I've realised people want the answer, but don't want to look for it. I started like you, and learned from mistakes and trial and error.

  1. Always have backps of important data. Don't know why you would want cloud storage backup, which goes against the idea of having NC in the first place. To answer your question though, yes you can backup to cloud storage, you don't connect it through Nextcloud, you use a utility like rClone and script it to backup to the cloud.

  2. It sounds like you're not familiar with Nextcloud's workings. So, upgrading from 27 to 30 will be slightly difficult for you, as the database needs an upgrade as well between 29 and 30 if I recall. You can do it, by searching through this forum. It was raised this year, as a few people were having problems.

  3. You can keep your configuration, as long as you retain your config.php file, which doesn't get overwritten when you upgrade.

  4. When you upgrade, you do it by changing the docker's lable to the desired version. I would suggest doing this first and stepping through the major versions. You don't have to upgrade every single release. But, when you get to v.30 you will need to upgrade your database's tables, which people have strugled with. So, if you're going to upgrade, only go up to v29 first by upgrading versions. ie. v 27 ---> v.27.5 ---> v 27.9---> v. 28 ---> v 28.5 ----> v 28.9 ---> v 29 ---> v 29.9 (whatever the last version is of 29). Hopefully, you get the idea.

  5. (Alternatively), you can drop your NC and your database, delete the appdata folders for both from your appdata folder and start again at v30. What I can't tell you is if you're going to have to update the tables manually anyway. So, you might as well do point 4 and learn something.

  6. You're not going to lose your data during an upgrade, unless you do something stupid. NC references your data, it does't manipulate it. What would it mean to you, if you lost the data now? If you think you would have that sinking feeling, where your balls are in your throat, then it means something to you. So, back it up. Drives fail all the time, unRaid has redundency, but thats not the same as a backup and you can still lose your data.

  7. There have been several instances on this thread where people don't know how to upgrade correctly and its been responded to many times. I suggest you go and look at those first, search under my username because I've responded to examples like this several times.

  8. If you're really concerned, then create a second instance of NC and database, with the lastest version, referencing a new data folder. Once that is up and running, you can move your data over from old folder to new folder and tell NC to re-scan the files. You won't have any data from your calendar, deck, messenger, etc as that's in the old database, but if your only concerned about your files, then you could start there. After that's done, you can drop your old NC and Dataase from docker and appdata.

  9. Be careful of bad advice.

There is no point in moving the data, quite the opposite you want it where it should be or nextcloud will probably consider it removed. It should not be touched, we're just saying that in the unlikely case of something going terribly wrong if it's important data you want to have a backup.
