Reduce power consumption with powertop

Has anyone had issues with the ASM1166 NVME adaptors?

Updated to 7, after a restart the ASM1166 NVME-6x Sata seems to have stopped working, along with another port/drive. Upon restart the single missing drive came back but the ASM1166 doesn't come on anymore.

it seems to have come back on again after starting with it removed, shutting down and refitting.

Good news everyone! I managed to get C10 pkg C-State (previously I get no higher than C3) on Asrock LGA1700 mobo and you can too. Yay!   My setup is:   Motherboard: Asroc

Yeah I faced problems with proxmox GUI installer; I had to do CTRL+ALT+F2 to get console then add some forced configuration override to properly detect the iGPU. Here's the guide for the error (e

As you said it crashes without powertop autotune, this shouldn't be necessary, but after 1-2 hours not crashing I would try it with powertop, too.

I just restarted UNRAID without running powertop autotune, and it crashed before use time.

In summary:

UNRAID hangs with autotune executed and without autotune executed.

Ubuntu, hangs with Autotune executed, but does not hang without autotune executed (almost 5 hours online)

Mine has been working without any issues (it's also the nvme variant).

Not sure why it differs without powertop, but finally it seems to be something with your hardware. Did you try to remove all additional components, so you only test board+ram+cpu?

I will try removing the array (sata HDDs) and the two NVME (chache) later

I'm trying a new power supply right now to see if it has anything to do with it.

I have been using a Seasonic SPX650 (I need a small source for Jonsbo n3)

Now I have a Corsair RM750X out of the box and so far it has been running for two hours without any crashes (the C states seem lower now too)

Screenshot with testing power supply and 2 hours on.

Ok, this is a rare issue, but some power supplies switch off, if the power consumption falls under a specific value. For this case some BIOS have a setting to artificially raise the power consumption (but nobody really wants that).

Update, it had been 5 hours without crashes with the new power supply, without running autotune, I ran autotune and after 30 minutes it froze. I have restarted and will leave it overnight (if it doesn't crash before) without autotune. If it doesn't hang, I don't know what steps to take next to solve this... I would try to order a replacement for the seasonic spx650 and I would try again, if everything worked without autotune it is progress, then see why when you run autotune it stops working and congeals again. (I think they are two different problems)

I update, with the new source (without running autotune) it stops working after 4-5 hours. This is driving me crazy

It has been running for 9 hours without crashes, removing the HDD and without starting the pools or array

EDIT:

Damn, it froze again after almost 11 hours of operation (no hdd and nvme connected and array turned off)

I don't understand anything

I really don't know if it freezes or what is happening, since no image is seen, nor does it respond to anything from the keyboard or network

Hi everyone,

so i got myself an UPS, and now that's the only "Bad" device in powertop. Is this a common issue? I'm suprised because people with UPS seem to care about power consumption a lot (going by these forums).

I'm not sure about that. I would say that people with UPS care about power reliability and clean shutdown.

Of course, there can be some overlap between several groups of interest.

Disable xmp and take 10 hours running without any problems so far

Now that nerd pack is no longer compaitiable with unraid 7 is there another way to install powertop?

I have done some tests with memtest and these are the results.

module 1 Memory

module 2

Slot A

Slot B

Results:

Memory module 1 in Slot A (no errors with xmp disabled and no errors with xmp enabled)

Memory module 2 in Slot A (no errors with xmp disabled and no errors with xmp enabled)

Memory module 1 in Slot B (XMP enabled with errors)

Memory module 2 in slot B (XMP enabled with errors)

It seems that everything fails in memory slot B

At the moment I have not solved the problem. I still have to see if the motherboard is really defective or not (if I don't enable xmp both slots work perfectly) The memory is healthy and the processor too, that is 100% verified. What I don't really know is if it is a problem with the motherboard, the bios or simply the design (slot b is longer and therefore has more sensitivity)

Great thread. Thank you!

I managed to get aspm enabled for my Aquantia AQC100 10gbe card after I found this post 179082-asrock-n100m-aspm-enable-with-all-pci-slots-populated and followed this excellent guide it links to https://wireless.docs.kernel.org/en/latest/en/users/documentation/aspm.html

This has my i5 12400 dropping to C6 which I'm more than happy with. Previously only got to C3. It's a busy machine so just happy to save a few $$ on the odd occasion it is idle.

I need a pcie 3x2 or 2x4 card as I'm short or slots on my micro atx board. Struggled to find anything officially supporting IEEE 802.3az at a reasonable price and the 1.5w max power consumption on this card tickled my fancy. So more then please to get aspm working

Please do not copy the "#ASPM fix for Aquantia AQC100" part of my go file. You need to follow the guide in the aspm documentation and work it out for your specific hardware.

I've ended up with this

Seems to be zero performance impact but continuing to monitor... .

Did you tune with Powertop? Your Intel Networkcard won't support any energy savings and if you tune it with Powertop the System gets unresponsive.

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218499

In Debian 12.9 Kernal 6.1. If you enable the tunable for the I226-V (connected or unconnected), nothing hangs and it all works fine.

In Rocky 9.5 Kernel 5.14. If you enable the tunable for the I226-V (connected or unconnected), nothing hangs and it all works fine.

In UNRAID 7 Kernel 6.6.68. If you enable the tunable for the I226-V, where the NIC is unconnected, the system hangs... But if you have the NIC connected and enable the tunable, nothing hangs.

Starting to think there is something specific to UNRAID causing this.

Anyone here recognized an increased power consumption since Unraid 7.0.0?

I have a Asrock Rack b650d4u-2l2t/bcm with 4x 32GB DDR5 ECC and a 7700x which is in 65W ECO mode.

After the upgrade I recognized a much higher power usage than before. And whatever i set in the new Power Mode or the prior used "Tips and Tweaks" the wattage is not changing.

Attached is the power consumption meassuremnt where you can see the increase after I upgraded Unraid on 17th of Jan.

No increase here at idle nor obvious change in daily power use, x570-d4u/32gb/5600x.

Yeah, my idle usage was about 2W lower before updated to 7.0.0(rc2), i also noticed that I'm not able to reach C10 anymore for some reason, while i was able to run at C10 on 6.12.15

Can anyone help me fix this? I know I shouldn't use the auto tune command, I'm using a SATA JMB 585 controller. But I don't know what I should use. Sorry, I'm new to this.

it seems to have come back on again after starting with it removed, shutting down and refitting.

I've noticed an interesting quirk with my ASM1166 PCIe controller - it seems to have quite a resilient memory; if I'm overly aggressive with my tuning attempts, all the connected drives drop offline, and don't come back after a restart. However, if I completely shut down and wait 5-10 seconds before powering on again, then everything seems to work fine again.

Does anyone have any experience in tuning the Asus TUF Gaming B760M platform?

I have an i5-12500 running on the ASUS TUF Gaming B760M Plus WiFi II motherboard (latest bios, 1805), and I'm unable to reach any C state higher than C3. All of the APM and C-state settings in the bios are enabled. I've tried the following:

  • Disconnected all peripherals, hard drives, SSDs etc so that nothing is plugging in to the motherboard except the CPU, memory and the Unraid USB stick
  • Disabled all onboard peripherals like WiFi, sound, bluetooth etc
  • I've tried disabling the onboard Realtek NIC and installing an Intel based PCIe NIC

I'm at a bit of a loss now - I've eliminated all peripherals as the cause, and I've systematically reset the bios and re-configured all power management settings I can find and its not making any difference. I've also gone through and enabled all the powertop and various other settings mentioned on the 1st page of this post.

@NAS2-B650D4U-2L2T:

I've got the exact same power consumption as before with ASRock B550 Taichi, AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G, 64GB Kingston Server Premier DIMM DDR4-3200 (ECC).
