"SimpleFeatures" Plugin - Version 1.0.11

Featured Replies

I think I got that - base = core ?

But my real problem was that none of the packages was automaticly installed with reboot. I had to manually do a "installplg xxx" for each plugin.

re-read the install instructions in the first post of this thread.  There is no need for installing the .tgz modules and instead you should go with the new .plg plugin files that are found in the Simplefeatures.zip file.  I too was tripped up and only when @speeding_ant responded my post to re-read the instructions, did I get it right.

I did use the .plg files! I successfully installed it manually using installplg, but the install on boot process isn't working.

What does the SimpleFeatures plugin CACHE-DIRS do? I actually have it install but no idea what it does.

What does the SimpleFeatures plugin CACHE-DIRS do? I actually have it install but no idea what it does.

It provides a front-end GUI to the cache_dirs script (included). This script is used to keep directory entries in memory and prevent unnecessary spin-up of disks.

Do a search under "Applications" to find more information regarding the cache_dirs script.

Cache_Dirs:

Linux has a built in feature that keeps frequently used directories in memory to prevent disks spinning up when browsing directories. That is a great functionality in combination with unraid, you would want all your disks spun down most of the time right ?

Thing is that this standard linux functionality is based on frequently used directories and available memory. A lot of the directories in unraid might not be access frequently and therefor they would fall out of this linux process.

What cacher dirs does (I am simplyfing a lot here) is basically asking for directory listings of every directory in your array every few seconds, this "fools" linux into thinking the directories are frequently accessed and they remain in memory. As a result your disks will be spun down untill you actually view -FILES-.

You basically only have to turn it on, in some cases however the amount of directories can be SO large that it might cause some issues, then you can use the webinterface to exclude directories from the process. For example I have excluded my itunes directory. To mitigate all my drives spinning up when using itunes I have limited my itunes share to one disk. As soon as I start itunes I do that to play music so that disk will spin up anyhow.

Does this help ?  Stock unraid is really simple and out of the box, but there are a lot of ways to further optimize and tailor to specific needs, this is one of them.

If you dont want to be bothered with specifics just turn it on, mostly likely you will never experience a negative issue, should you; then just turn it off.

i'm just trying to install this on rc5

i copied all plg files to the flash drive under \config\plugins\ and rebooted

opening up web browser, it doesnt show me simplefeatures (even refreshing doesnt help)

what do i do wrong?

edit: i'm just thinking, maybe the machine has no internet connection

how do i check this?

Well... If your unraid server is on the same network as your regular pc or mac and that regular pc or mac has an internet connection then most probably your unraid system will have internet access to..  At least you would have to do some special stuff to prevent it...

Easiest thing to do is login your unraid system thru telnet and install the packages by hand: installplg <filename>, then you can see possible error messages..

When you are accessing your unraid flash drive as a share then the plugins need to be in /config/plugins ..

I also read the base package is required..

Where is that base package?

You need to go to:

http://code.google.com/p/unraid-simplefeatures/downloads/list

and download the zipfile called Simplefeatures plugins.zip

Out of that zipfile copy all plugins you want to /config/plugins. Make sure that at least core.webGUI is downloaded.

I would advise putting all plg's in except the simplefeatures.web.server, you might not need that. The rest is all to enhance your unraid experience.

i installed it manually now.. everything is ok now..

But i still want to know, why he didnt install it on a reboot?

Upgrade to 1.0.5 went well. Everything works! WOW, it's very impressive!! I think I was running 1.0rc2 with just the base, disk health and sys info. I added all the plugins except web server, s3 sleep, dns server and email notify.  I only spent a short time with it and I look forward to exploring. Thanks for your hard work making such a nice interface!

But i still want to know, why he didnt install it on a reboot?

I understand that, in some cases, there has been a race condition between when the operating system has completed the installation of all the NIC software to establish the contection to the internet and the start in the installation of the plug-ins.  In such cases, the plug-in install will fail.  However, both the automatic and the manual installation download all of the required files to the Flash drive so that all future reboots should properly install the package.

I'm running into an issue here.

After adding the plugin files to my thumb drive and rebooting, I'm receiving the following errors:

wget: unable to resolve host address 'unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com'
wget: unable to resolve host address 'unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com'

Welcome to Linux 3.4.11-unRAID (tty1)

I found a workaround in the another thread which recommended running the following command:

installplg /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures.core.webGUI-1.0.5-noarch-1.plg

This worked and I now have the updated GUI, but the plugins are not loading and I'm still receiving eleven "unable to resolve" errors as before.

Here is a screenshot of my plugins folder.

Thanks in advance for the help!

For file manager functionality, could AjaXplorer be a solution/inspiration?

http://ajaxplorer.info/

It's free and open source.

I'm running into an issue here.

After adding the plugin files to my thumb drive and rebooting, I'm receiving the following errors:

wget: unable to resolve host address 'unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com'
ditto 10 more times.........

I think you just need to manually install the other plugins using the "installplg" command. From the screen shot you have 12 simpleFeature plugins; you installed 1 and now eleven can't install. The post above yours mentions some conditions where network settings are not finalized when trying to install the plugins and you would see errors like yours. Once all of the plugins are manually installed, you should not get the error at boot time.

I'm still learning unRAID. I had some initial problems getting plugins to install automatically. Good luck with your system!

Make sure DNS is configured correctly, otherwise plugins will not download.

I'm finding that the GUI just randomly stops responding since installing the new SF. Any suggestions where I should start looking to find out why?

Dear speeding-ant,

I would like to report a bug in simple features.

When choosing to include disks for a certain share from the drop-down list, simple features is putting spaces like:

disk 1, disk 2, disk 3

and it should be:

disk1,disk2,disk3

Here is the topic where the bug was discovered:

Best regards.

Not a bug, you can report to the user a nicer looking field without changing what the form posts. disk1,disk2,disk3 would be sent.

Thank you.

I was advised to report a bug that's why i post here.

Excuse me if it was meant to be like this.

Best regards.

It looks nicer but personally I would report the field values without the misleading spaces since unRAID would not work with them in it.  The check boxes are fine but displaying the field as it is actually entered is less misleading when seeking assistance for a problem.

SF offers a consistent look of te disk names with a space between disk and number, as it is supposed to be for an end user perspective.

There is nothing misleading about the checkboxes, selecting the disks you want to include/exclude hides the internal naming and syntax of unRAID.

And from a support perspective, it is completely wrong.    Way before SimpleFestures we've had unRAID users put the WRONG values in the include/exclude fields.  the fields are poorly documented, with no feedback if incorrect values are entered.  It is a poorly implemented user interface by unRAID.    You tried to make it better, but made it more confusing for me to provide support.

If you had JUST put the checkboxes, and completely hidden the string entered, I don't think anybody would have cared.  But when your string representation is WRONG for unRAID, it misled me, and all I'm trying to do is help people.

The next time I get a support request, I'll just ask them to disable SimpleFeatures and then check again.  I'm sure Tom@lime-tech will do the same.    If it makes my task more difficult to help people, I'l l only piss off them when I mistakenly give guidance, and get frustrated when it only masked symptoms (in this case, presenting FALSE symptoms)
