jumperalex
FYI, regardless of the logs, best way to know what you have running is to type "smbstatus" at the command line to see what version is running. Quote Link to comment
optiman
true, that command shows I'm running 3.6.8 I actually wasn't able to locate any lines in my syslog that show I installed 3.6.8 via my GO file, so I don't think it is logged at all. I was surprised as I thought the syslog would show everything, including what you install via GO file. Quote Link to comment
jumperalex
Yeah i didn't see it in my lo;g either, though I did see the start command i issued. The samba log found using simplefeatures does show it though. But the real tell is smbstatus. Quote Link to comment
JustinChase
Okay, so first of all, I included a typo in my original post about this. Here is my actual go script. (which I changed to 3.6.9.tar.gz) - and it said that the source and destination were the same cd pub/slackware/slackware-current/source/n/samba/ Delete old version of samba - (here is where I stopped) ####edit samba.SlackBuild, and change on 2 places so it's match the extension of the new file >>>> samba-*.tar.xz >>>> samba-*.tar.gz >>>> samba-$VERSION.tar.xz >>>> samba-$VERSION.tar.gz $ chmod +x samba.SlackBuild $ ./samba.SlackBuild Slackware package /tmp/samba-3.6.2-i486-1.txz created. but stopped at the "Delete old version of samba" part, since the rest wasn't working when typing it into putty. Probably was stupid to even start doing that, but sometimes I do dumb things. so, I'm not sure where I am really, other than seemingly running 3.6.9 for the last couple of hours. I tried deleting a movie (the harry potter movie shown above) from Windows Explorer, and got a permissions error. This is the problem I'm trying to cure. I keep getting permission errors when trying to move, copy or rename various files. It seems to have something to do with which machine last 'touched' the file, and then a different machine getting permission errors when trying to do something with that file later. I tried to watch a TV show I downloaded with SickBeard, and my media player choked saying I didn't have permission to do so. When I run the 'newperms' script on the video folder, these problems all go away. However, new files then have these issues later. I really just want all the permissions errors to stop once and for all, and thought that the newer samba might help with that based on the comments I've seen here. So, with all that said, what's my best next course of action? If just going to samba 3.6.8 is the best choice, I'm fine with that. i just figured that since 3.6.9 followed so quickly after 3.6.8 that it likely fixed another error in 2.6.8, so going to the newest was better. thanks again for any and all help everyone! jumperalex
Yeah so don't worry about 3.6.9 for now. To build it yourself from pete's instructions you're going to need gcc compiler installed (that was why it didn't work for me earlier) and the file pete offered doesn't seem to be working. I have no doubt he "did it right" but the build script he's pulling from slackware might not work for 3.6.9 since it seems we're getting library errors. I don't know enough to be anything but dangerous, so I stopped there Oh yeah and I too saw 3.6.9 when running smbstatus but lost actual connectivity from all my clients hitting the server. "Proof" that the library error is Bad Your best bet is to get 3.6.8 running, validate that it is running, then run the new permissions script and reboot. From there then you can determine if you still have the same problem. 3.6.8 does seem to be working for most everyone else and it doesn't look like you've quite got all the steps done to prove that it isn't going to help you. Frank1940
By the way!!! The new permissions script can take a long, long time to run--- especially if you have a lot of files and/or directories. Be sure to wait for it to finish. Best plan might be to simply plan on it running overnight... Quote Link to comment
JustinChase
Thanks everyone. I downloaded the 3.6.8 version for Slackware, put it in my packages folder, and updated my go script to point to this file. I rebooted and verified I'm now running version 3.6.8. I ran the newperms script overnight, but still had a problem with one video file this morning. I manually ran newperms /mnt/user/video/TV/ and the file is now working fine. Hopefully there won't be any more permissions issues from now on. Quote Link to comment
warhead
Just an FYI for those having shared library issues with libpam.so.0, just install it before running samba. Package can be found here http://slackpack.ludost.net/packages/slackware-13.1/linux-pam-1.1.3-i486-1gds.txz Seems to work for me Quote Link to comment

Your constant starting and stopping Samba is a good portion of your problem with your Windows' (and Samba) networking. (You are removing your server name from the list of Windows computers every time you do it. It then can take several minutes for it to get re-register with the system.) With the script (it goes in your go file) that I have shown in the link will permanently install 3.6.8 on your computer. The Samba 'stop' and 'start' occur only when your computer is booting up. It would be nice if Tom would release an updated rc candidate but I really doubt if he is going to do it just to update the Samba version. I am certainly not going to get bend out of shape if he doesn't--- especially since the user can easily update the version himself. Quote Link to comment

This one in particular was found by SickBeard, downloaded by SABnzbd, then processed by the AutoProcessTV script. My media player complained that I didn't have permission to play the file. i have since ran the newperms script on the folder, since I wanted to watch the show, so I can't give any specifics of that file any longer. If/when it happens again, what can I do to figure out why it's screwed up, so that I can eliminate the cause of this annoying problem once and for all? Quote Link to comment

BRiT
If/when it happens again, what can I do to figure out why it's screwed up, so that I can eliminate the cause of this annoying problem once and for all? It is related to the plugins you are running and not unRAID. You need to configure the plugins (SAB et al) to use the proper permissions. In SAB try using 777 or something more applicable. Are the files that are giving you problems in folders that don't have full read/write permission or are "owned" by a different user? Even when downloading with 777, my understanding (that could be wrong) is that files inherit their parent directory's permissions. Quote Link to comment
JustinChase
I don't know if this is related, but i just discovered that a user is not able to see a subfolder of a user share. She can see and use the files in the share, and can see the folder called "business", but when she double-clicks, it gives here a permission error, and will not open the folder to display the files and folders within. I have the same permissions on my machine, and I can navigate this folder without issue. It feels like something is very wrong on this setup, but I'm not sure where to look for a fix. I've ran the "new permissions" script more than once on this box, and it helps for a while, then I get issues again after some time Quote Link to comment

They shouldn't be, since my 'fix' is to run newperms /mnt/user/video/{folder with issues} this should fix the ownership and access permissions on the whole folder and all subfolders. I've also run it on just /mnt/user/video a few times, but since it takes much longer, I'm just running it on the specific sub-folder whenever I have a problem. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with no homegroup (only a workgroup), in case that matters. Quote Link to comment
BLKMGK
I'm having similar issues both with SAB and with deleting folders/browse in general. Reading is no issue but deleting sure can be, especially if trying to remove folders. I'll try swapping SAMBA versions to see if that helps. SAB runs on another machine so I'd expect it's not the cause but I'll check just in case to make sure it's setting files properly... Quote Link to comment
brimnac
Take the time and let it run overnight if you need to. The New Permissions script runs across all your user shares and is the best option to use, honestly. Take the time to do that first. Quote Link to comment
