  1. That depends on how much writing to it you will be doing. My primary cache drive is a 5TB spinner. I use my SSD's as pools for Plex and a couple other apps where the increased speed pays more noticeable dividends.
  2. I considered it, but just picked up a used GPU cooler fan and attached it to the board. No issues that I've been able to tell.
  3. I'm interested in low power + ITX form factor that supports enough bandwidth (and has the slots) to make a 16 or 24 port HBA worthwhile, along with 10gb ethernet. In reality, I'd probably settle for almost any improvement over 1gb.
  4. I use both screen and tmux. Screen's a little easier to use given how infrequently I need something like it, but tmux has a lot more capabilities (learning to be comfortable with vim + tmux is a goal).
  5. Just make sure the seller is reputable. There are a few sellers that I have had good experience with (I tend to buy used enterprise drives).
  6. That's a plumbing problem. You're way past a simple water-cooling solution for that. I'm pretty sure your unraid box isn't a beginner box either. 4 GPU's in 1 server is incredibly rare. I work in object detection and recognition and we rarely have 2 GPU's in a single server because it's really not cost effective.
  7. Why I overthink it? Just use a quality AIO cpu or GPU cooler. I’m using one in my server because I’m running a Ryzen with a high TDP. The AIO cooler is smaller and quieter than an equivalent air cooled solution. I’m not running in a server/rack configuration, though. Just a giant full tower case, 20 something drives, 2hbas, 1gpu.
  8. Have you tried creating a script that only does one or two things? Maybe create a file and write to it? Make sure you can do something simple first.
  9. If you use the array in Unraid and use parity drive(s), you can lose a drive and still recover (or 2 if you have dual parity). ZFS plays no role in this functionality. I'll state it again. ZFS has nothing to do with this capability of Unraid. More importantly, none of this is a substitute for regular backups separate from your NAS (and just to be clear, ZFS does not address this either - no filesystem addresses this).
  10. Why is ZFS the long term solution? What about ZFS will prevent you from losing data again, that a different file system won't?

That’s the great thing about Reddit. If you don’t like how a sub is run, you can start your own.
  12. Not sure what you're asking. How would pihole enhance unraid itself?
  13. NextCloud or OwnCloud?
  14. Are these shucked drives? 3.3v issue should be your problem.
  15. My server sits next to my desk that I use every day (I WFH). I have a mix of Exos, IronWolf Pro, Red, UtlraStar, Toshiba - I hear a hum that reminds me of fan being on.
  16. Any reason not to just store a mobile optimized version? Encode and Decode Capabilities for 7th Generation Intel® Core™... (2) Plex Hardware Transcoding, Explained : PleX (reddit.com) (2) Disappointed in 13900k iGPU transcoding compared to dedicated GPU : PleX (reddit.com)
  17. What are you watching on that it requires transcoding? It would be far cheaper to upgrade your player.
  18. It's a 65w cpu. What you should expect to see is completely dependent on what is running (which is not just the drives).
  19. When you test the drives, are you using the same power connector as when attached to the HBA? If it is a different power source (cable), then 3.3v is my thought as well. If it is the same power source (cable), then I don't see how 3.3v would be the issue.
  20. Completely normal. 30gig is way too small to be useful for windows.
  21. Last time I went down this path, I contacted several colo's and asset disposal companies to ask if they knew of any used racks or related equipment (or anyone getting rid of this kind of stuff on their own/closing shop/etc). I picked up a small rolling rack for free just for "getting rid of it".
  22. This is what I'm in the process of doing... 3d print your own NAS with 24 hard drives - YouTube BTW, you don't have to do it yourself. It would actually be faster and cheaper (not much) if I paid to have it made.
  23. It's writing to the VM itself. Need to check what logs are being written and where.
  24. FYI, the case appears to be an Antec Nineteen-Hundred (a high quality, full-tower case).
