Shamalamadindong
Guys quick question, Dual socket, 8 RAM slots, IPMI, 4 PCI-e 8x slots, 10 sata ports. Roughly €250 with shipping, good deal? Quote Link to comment

I would say that's a decent price. What brand? I ended up paying CDN$440 + tax and shipping for my AsRock EP2C602-4L/D16 board (Though it sells for US$310 in the States). Definitely more than I wanted to spend on it, but I liked the extra ram slots (16 instead of 8 ). Quote Link to comment
DoeBoye
Orders are done and I'm waiting on my parts. Shipping to Canada is a bit slower unfortunately, so I probably won't see the CPUs and ram until the last week of February. At the end of the day I went with: Motherboard: AsRock EP2C602-4L/D16 CPU: 2 x Intel Xeon e5-2670 Ram: 8 x 8GB ECC Registered Cooler: 2 x Supermicro SNK-P0050AP4 1x adapter to convert PCI-e cable into EPS cable for second cpu. I'm reusing my Corsair TX750 V2 750W PSU and my Norco 4224 case. It cost me around CDN$1100. With our dollar in the tank, and duty etc at the border, it's not as cheap as you American folks, but overall a huge upgrade over my existing setup for not an unreasonable amount of $$ . I'm glad to see all the others get in on this deal! I get the feeling there's going to be a bit of an uptick in the VM forums when all of us who didn't have the rigs to do it before start stretching their wings! . I know I'm going to be in there a lot! I'm already planning on replacing an existing Mac and PC desktops with virtual machines. Quote Link to comment
outsider
Motherboard: AsRock EP2C602-4L/D16 CPU: 2 x Intel Xeon e5-2670 Ram: 8 x 8GB ECC Registered Cooler: 2 x Supermicro SNK-P0050AP4 Great choices. I went with the cheaper AsRock EP2C602 as I didn't think I needed the extra ram slots and the extra 2 nics. I feel for you on the CAD dollar value. I'm from canada too. However my reasoning on spending the cash now is because I don't think I'll need to upgrade this machine for quite a looooong time. I'm coming from a 6 core AMD (and you have a 4 core AMD) and this is undeniably a HUGE jump in performance for both of us. Two E5-2670 cores is about 5-6 times faster then I currently have (and faster still for you). Last time I upgraded my server was 4 years ago, and I may have had a doubling of performance. In theory I should be good for a couple of generations, and should only need to upgrade when technology gets to again double the speed of the 16 cores (32 threads) that we'll son have. (Just writing 16 cores with 32 threads makes me giddy)! I'm looking forward to a bright visualizing future Quote Link to comment

Honestly, if it wasn't for all the new vm capabilities in UnRaid, I'd probably be perfectly happy with the system I have. It does everything I currently need (Serving up content to Kodi, running a bunch of dockers, data repository for all my PCs). Of course, now with vm on the table... I WANT MORE . I really struggled on the choice between the basic model you have (2 less ethernet, 8 less ram slots, 1 extra PCI-e slot), the one I went with, and even the model with 2 10Gbit ethernet cards (There's one on ebay for $550). I have the cabling already for 10Gbit (cat6a), but I would need to upgrade everything else, and I really couldn't justify it. In the end, I figured, a cheap easy upgrade path to more ram was the most important feature for me. Whatever the case, these are going to be monster systems, and I really can't wait to get my hands on mine!! Quote Link to comment

Apologies for being cryptic but i don't want anyone here to snatch it before i can raise the money It is a dual socket motherboard but i intend to only use 1 cpu at this time (again, lack of funds). According to this and the motherboard's own diagram it should be able to work with just 1 cpu. As far as i can tell from the diagram there isn't anything connected except the relevant ram slots. http://www.servethehome.com/answered-cpu-dual-processor-motherboard/ Quote Link to comment

Conversely, with no CPU2, one would not have access to several PCIe 3.0 x8 slots. You may need both CPUs to access all the functions, depends on the motherboard. Quote Link to comment
Shamalamadindong
As i said, according to the motherboard diagram in the manual nothing except the relevant ram slots is hooked up to CPU2. Quote Link to comment

I saw a couple showing 200 watts(on dual proc systems), with all power save modes off. I'm assuming the following for my estimated power consumption: Dual E5-2670 with a GTX480 and 8 HDs idle: just shy of 300w (200W for CPUs/mobo, 50W for GPU, 40W for all HDs) Full: just shy of 750W (400W for CPU/mobo, 300W for GPU, 40W for all HDs) I'm going with a 850W PSU for my system (do those estimates seem reasonable to anyone else?) I'm good with 300W idle, considering the amount of horsepower I'll have at my disposal. Quote Link to comment

(With power saving modes turned on for just the mb, dual cpu's, and ram.) I plan on running with a much smaller PSU since I have no plans for a monster gpu. I'll start with an Antec 620 sitting unused. Quote Link to comment
NotYetRated
I too am hoping idle can be brought in under or around 100 watts, but we will see! My current e3-1245v3 with 2 GPU's, 10 HDD, 3 SSD idles as low as 50 watts, per my kill-a-watt and confirmed on my battery backup. That is with the VM's off, if it matters. Quote Link to comment

tr0910
No, none of that, the Sandy Bridge 1220 Xeon I have in a X9 Supermicro will idle at less than 40w (just the MB, CPU and RAM) Adding drives and SATA controllers even spun down increases that load to 60-75w minimum. Now I'm not sure what 64gb of RAM will require for idle power. And the 2670 is in a different class, but I hope it can throttle itself down under unRaid when idling. Usually Windows has the best power management, so that might show us what the best we could hope to attain. Quote Link to comment

outsider
And these guys (source) measured 202W at the wall with an idle system...
