Hi all,

Thanks for this great plugin. I noticed something in the logs when I started a new pre-clear...

I'm wondering why it thinks this disk (a WD red 6tb) is an SSD. Should I adjust something to do the head stress test that it has disabled?

Thanks,

whiteatom

I have the same problem with an WD40EFAX, which is clearly identified as a SMR drive by me, which cloud/should have in it's SMART data the TRIM command listed as available.

I dunno whats the method for checking if it's actually an SSD used by this plugin, but this could be the problem?

Greetings

Dark

Installation of the Plug-in seems to complete successfully.  I'm able to open the plugin, and my drives are listed. I was able to Preclear one disk as a test.

But, if I reboot the system, the plugin is gone as if it was never there.  If I reinstall, the same thing happens.  Trying to open the log from within the plugin yields an empty file.

I'm still pretty new to Unraid.  Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong?  or another location I should look for an error or other installation log?  Trying to figure it out myself here, but not sure where to start.  Thank you.

Is there any way to change the serial number of a drive in the array or unassigned drives?

I have an 8 bay USB-C enclosure with 4 drives in array and 4 free drives in unassigned that I want to preclear and have ready to add. Unfortunately the drivers of the enclosure or something override the drive serial numbers and the drive identification so the ID for each drive is

JMicron_Generic_DISK00_0123456789ABCDEF-0:0 - 10 TB (sda), then DISK01, etc.

I can preclear one of the unassigned drives, but if I try to do a second one it tries to do the first again because the serial numbers are doctored and the same for all the drives even though the other details are different, for example:

Model Family:

Seagate Desktop HDD.15

Device Model:

ST4000DM000-1F2168

Serial Number:

0123456789ABCDEF

Firmware Version:

CC54

Size:

4 TB

Can anyone think of a way around it? Otherwise I'll just wait until I add the precleared one, then I'll start preclearing the next one.

Thanks!

The plugin is fantastic, thank you all for your work on creating and maintaining it.

Asked this on Reddit too but maybe should have started here.  Does the pause last through a reboot?

I have a very long preclear going on a 14TB drive. It's about halfway done and the remote connect seems like it needs a reboot. Getting NGINX 502 Bad Gateway when I try to go into the terminal, can't update shares, etc. I think a reboot will fix.

I see a pause button in the Preclear. If I do that, then reboot, can I resume upon restart? I don't want to have to start over after 20+ hours! Thanks in advance.

After talking to others, I went ahead and tried it and you can indeed resume the Preclear.

I think I have found a bug. After some read errors, preclear died while pre-reading and says "RESULT: Preclear Finished Successfully!" (Two syntax errors happened).

I execute the preclear on two disks at same time and got same result :(

Bad RAM is a possible reason for post-read fail. Have you done memtest?

No, I don't. I have updated the bios of my motherboard  as server crashes unexpectedly on next day. The motherboard is a Gigabyte X570 AORUS ULTRA with original bios F3 (so a very old AGESA) updated to version F12e. I have also added the zenstates c6-disable in the go file and until now server is running fine. I rerun preclear yesterday and it complete successfully.

I will check RAM with memtest (4x16 Gb of Corsair Vengeance, that was the only memory listed on compatibility list I have been able to find).

First time setting up unraid.

I am precleaning two 8 TB disks and the read speed is going down as time goes on. Is this common or did I buy trash drives?

I think it's normal as the more it is reading, the more the reading is on the edge of the platter  (far from the center of the platter).

Other way around. It starts at the outer and works toward the inner.

The outer track has more data since it is longer, but since the RPM is constant you get more data per revolution so higher data rate with the longer outer tracks.

Just started a preclear on  2 usb easystores. Its been 2 hours and both say 'starting...' Is this normal?

Doesn't sound like it. Just started 3 preclears (internal drives) and they went from starting to the first step in a few seconds which has always been the case.  Haven't ever done any externals.

Setting up my first Unraid server. I bought 3 new Toshiba MG08ACA16TE 16TB drives. All three are in a NetApp DS4246 shelf. I Intend to use two of them as parity drives. I started a preclear on the 1st drive a little after midnight on 6/23. I started a preclear on the other two drives later that day around 5pm. The 1st drive is currently about 59% into the Post-Read phase and one of the other two drives is 48% into the Zeroing phase. Preclear on the third drive suddenly stopped with a message on the main page that says "Preclear in progress... unRAID's signature on the MBR failed - Aborted"

Does this mean the drive failed & is bad? Or is there some other issue?

I've attached the preclear log from my server

Not a bad drive, just your preclear signature was mot written correctly. Try again, skipping the pre-read to speed up the process.

I did just that & ran the preclear again skipping the pre-read & got the same error. I then moved the 3rd drive & put it in the slot that one of first two drives successfully completed in, to make sure there wasn't a hardware issue with one of the slots in the disk array shelf. I then ran preclear for a third time, still the same result. I've attached the latest logs. First Two drives finished successfully & I currently have them running in my array with one as a parity disk.

Also one weird thing I noticed is that every time Zeroing gets to 50% on the drive I'm having issues with, the speed goes up to 1200+ MB/s. How is that possible on a HDD with a SATA3 interface? Does that indicate some kind of issue with the drive?

Thanks for any help.

Here's a very minor bug i just found, in the current plugin.

I just used the nice plugin preClear with text-gui to start a preclear, that I then almost immediately terminated via stop-preclear session in the GUI. The preClear kept being displayed in the unraid under main, until I manually delete the three /tmp/preclear* files.

Hi guys I had previously posted this in a different thread but was advised to post it in here, (sorry new to Unraid)...

Hi wondering if anyone has any suggestions I am preclearing all the drives in my array , most of them get speeds of around 40/50MB/s to 130MB/s depending on what they are doing , I have 1 drive however which is going super slow drive model name is : ST2000DM001-1E6164_W1E7DZNH

BELOW is my unraid pre clear log during its pre-read cycle which has now been running for 24 hours JUST ON THE PRE READ.....

Finally I have all these drives attached to an ablecon pcie 3.0 sata III 10 port expansion card and i have changed the sata cable and tried a sata port on the motherboard for this 1 drive,
Is it just a case of a bad drive at this point???

EDIT: noticed something weird:

I noticed a weird quirk I started a pre clear again but this time ONLY on this drive and it started running at over 180MB/s as soon as I start another disk at the same time this one drops to 1MB-6MB/s no matter what phase its on!

Thanks in advance.

well it looks like i won't be alone in posting a question about what my error logs mean here, haha!

On a dell R720, i added an unassigned SSD a while back that was showing this error here1898999316_ScreenShot2020-07-01at1_26_25PM.thumb.png.62d7051fcc00ba084e9a5b4f6f29ed3d.png

I posted about it in the UAD forum, and somebody advised that it looked like maybe a bad cable since the disk SMART report came back good. However, yesterday i went to preclear a 10tb SAS drive, low hours, clean SMART report, and started getting errors trying to clear it. it would run for about 3 minutes, then stop and actually say completed successfully, but definitely not. i've attached the preclear log txt for that disk. I left the disk in the server, but not mounted or anything - with nothing in process on the disk, and my syslog is completely full today. Disk log looks like this:

910239210_ScreenShot2020-07-01at1_19_17PM.thumb.png.8e6d66d03373a6df5c0dc431ff748f6c.png

Preclear log was showing i/o errors on the new SAS disk too, which has me wondering if this is in fact either a problem with my backplane, sas cables, or both. These two disks are on the same column of the backplane, using the same sas cable connection, so it seems likely to me, but sure would love to have a 2nd or 3rd opinion before i start replacing more hardware. (syslog diagnostics also posted just in case)
