garycase
... But you've not factored in the time to find a keyboard & a monitor! True ... if you don't have a keyboard/monitor on your server (or IPMI) then you do indeed have to do that. I have all of my servers connected to a VGA switch [Mine is a 4-port switch, but this 2-port switch shows what I'm talking about: http://www.amazon.com/C2G-Cables-03364-2-Port-Manual/dp/B0000AQR8F/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1447262804&sr=8-3&keywords=a%2Fb+vga+switch ] ... so when I need to see the display I just switch a monitor to the server (instead of the PC it's normally connected to) and plug in a USB keyboard and I'm ready to go. Takes perhaps 30 seconds Link to comment
adammerkley
I guess the introduction of the AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 has driven down the price of the AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards. I just bought one from a reputable eBay seller for $26. Link to comment

Sorry if a dumb question but never dealt with these before and would much rather have more drive capability if I'm replacing anyways. Thx. Link to comment

garycase
The trusty old Adaptec 1430SA is still an excellent card as long as you have a PCIe x4 (or larger) slot available. They're no longer available new, but are easy to find on e-bay for $20-30: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adaptec-1430SA-4-Port-SATA-PCI-E-x4-RAID-0-1-10-JBOD-Controller-Card-/181629244484?hash=item2a49f25444:g:qhEAAOSw7ThUmRwr Link to comment

For normal read/write operations to the array performance will be similar, for parity check/syncs and disk rebuilds a fully loaded SASLP will limit you to ~80MB/s, SAS2LP can do 300MB/s+. Endda
Is there any 4-Port Sata controller card to be recommended at the moment? I use this in my setup = SYBA SI-PEX40064 PCI-Express 2.0 Low Profile Ready SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) Controller Card Is there anything you had to do to get this card to work(like disable virtualization or something)? I just tried this in my machine and unRAID didn't recognize the hard drive when I booted it up. I'm not sure if it is the card or the hard drive or what It's definitely not my connectors or the drive. So I'm pretty sure it is the controller card. Could I need to disable virtualization? I don't even use it on unRAID anyway BTW - I'm trying to use it on this motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131979 Link to comment
NickLawson
I have some queries, can you explain the purpose of these breakout cables? I figured it'd be a one-to-one from the port to a SATA connection. Like the Norco SS-500, has 6 SATA ports on the back, so I'd imagine doing 6 SATA cables from 6 of the 8 ports on the first card listed, to each on the Norco. http://www.7pcbmanufacturing.com/ Link to comment

On the controller card itself there are 2 connector ports (SFF-8087) and the other end(s) plug right into the drives via SATA connection. There are many different model cables, lengths and brands. japilch
I asked this in the wrong thread previously I think. I want to upgrade to an 8 port sata controller card. At this time I dont have any intention of upgrading to unraid 6 at this time as I dont have a need for the features. in the future I may combine my desktop pc with the NAS - but not right now. I am debating between SM SAS2LP-MV8 and an LSI 9211-8i card of some description. I know the SM card has some issues in V6 . could I please have some advice as to which way to go , as I dont have a clear preference. In terms of cost : SM wins , as it works straight out of the box. the cheapest I have seen for an lsi card is $174 for a silverstone tek , however that will need to be flashed. then I saw this : http://www.qbtl.com/new-it-mode-lsi-9211-8i-sas-sata-8-port-pci-e-6gb-raid-controller-card-us-seller.html , it appears to be a genuine LSI , and cost is $124, competitive with the SM card. In a straight head to head, any preferences ? anything else I should be aware of that will help me make a decision? thanks for any assistance Link to comment
trurl
Even if you only want a NAS, V6 gives notifications of SMART issues and other things which can prevent you from accumulating problems until you have more than you can recover from. And there are other features besides VMs and dockers that make it a better NAS. Also, V6 is going to be better supported by the forum since that is what most will be running. Link to comment

japilch
the point I was making there is that cost is not a factor as there is about $15 btwn the SM card and the LSI card. Given the Marvel chip issue with unraid 6 , is there anything else that would tip the balance in deciding one card over the other. Link to comment

Given the Marvel chip issue with unraid 6 , is there anything else that would tip the balance in deciding one card over the other. If cost is not a factor then by all means get the LSI card. Not worth the potential headaches imo. There are corruption issues, VM issues, and preclear issues with the marvel chipset in unraid. I got rid of my 2 SAS2LP cards because I was getting SMART timeout errors during preclear. The preclear would just stop like 30 seconds in. Link to comment
Fireball3
Initially those Supermicro cards were favoured by LT in their servers. Surprisingly I can't find any traces of them in the new build proposals. There is absolutely no reference add-on card. I wonder what LT is promoting/supporting at the moment? Link to comment

It would be nice to have an official statement in the unraid 6 manual.... Let's just say i'm not really a big fan of marvel controllers. First got burned on my X58 mainboard with a watered down SATA-III. I think they are generally a lower-end more buggy controller and the LSI chipset is mostly superior. You read around the internet in the other NAS forums and the LSI/M1015 controllers are pretty much the go to cards for NAS builds. Link to comment
