awpullen1
I have just upgraded to the latest version of Unbalance v5.6.4 and am trying to move all the data off one old drive (disk2) to a new larger drive (disk3) but it keeps failing. It does not give an error in the UI it just completes very quickly and gives the impression it worked. But when I looked at the log I am see errors. Can anyone help identify what the issue might be. I am attaching a section of the log here: W: 2022/03/29 15:45:38 server.go:410: closing socket: unable to ReadMessage: (websocket: close 1001 (going away)) I: 2022/03/29 15:45:55 app.go:77: Received signal: (terminated) ... shutting down the app now ... TrondHjertager
I am having some problems with unBallance. When I try to use it it just stops during the planning stage. It runs through the "checking issues..." stage, and just stops. The working-logo in the top right corner is "pulsating", but nothing else happens. I have never been able to use unBallance consistantly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have tried multiple client machines and multiple browsers to see if that could be the issue. It's really frustrating, because this is an awesome tool. Any tips? Any logs that could give me an indication on what the problem might be? Quote Link to comment

I haven't see any development since last March I think that was, maybe the dev team is slowdown? There are always new features and plugins unraid can have to make it more available for the user. Even the dumb ones. I'm not even going to try and use unbalance until it has proven to work. I swapped so many drives around some are completely empty and some are bustout out! Anyone here use UNBALANCE for server version 4.76.1. So they can put the same amount of space on all the drives? I think it is more efficient that way. Quote Link to comment
opentoe
I've used it a couple of times on 6.9.2 with no issues. Retiring a couple old drives so I chose this tool. It has been working great since the first move. I'm so tired of mechanical drives. Eventually everything will be in a cloud or locally like an SSD. I doubt I'll be alive to see it happen. Disk moves/copies take forever! Quote Link to comment
CaptainTivo
I want to do something but I am not sure that Unbalance is the right tool Here is what I want. I have two shares: Backup1 - consisting of only 2 disks (disk4 and disk10) Here is the definition of Backup1 Backup2 - consisting of one disk (disk1) Here is the definition of Backup2: I want to move some (but not all) files from disk4 to disk1, that is, from share Backup1 to share Backup2. When I set up Unbalance and run the dryrun I get this: So it will copy files from /Backup1/backups/ ... on disk4 to /Backup1/backups/... on disk1 This is not what I want. I want the files copied to /Backup2/backups/... on disk1 So, can just run this Unbalance command and then just change the name of directory Backup1 to Backup2 on disk1 like so: cd /mnt/user/disk1 mv Backup1 Backup2 Does this automagically make the files available only on the Backup2 share? I confess that even after using Unraid for over a decade, I still don't fully understand how the shares work. I *think* that any directory at the top level of *any* disk creates a share but I may be wrong. Any help from the experts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. opentoe
Question. I'm just using three disks here in a SCATTER. I'm ticking the check box FROM a 4TB drive and ticking 2 check boxes TO a 10TB with almost all space left and an 18TB drive with most all space left. Why would unbalance only move files to the 18TB drive and not include the 10TB drive? Is there a way to force UNbalance to move files to each of the drives and not just 1? Quote Link to comment

I'm trying to clean up my share data so that each share is no longer scattered across numerous drives (so that "movies", for example, is limited to 3 drives and unraid only has to spin those drives up when movies are being accessed). I'm running into a hurdle using the Gather function however; when I get to the screen to select the Target drives to gather the share data on to, only a few drives are showing up (and they don't happen to be the drives that I want to target). I'm guessing I'm probably just missing something simple. I've disabled all of my dockers and VMs so nothing should be accessing drives. I've tried spinning up all the drives before hand as well. I have been able to work around this by slowly piecemealing the transfer by using Scatter to move share data disk-by-disk, but that's obviously a much more manual process. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! It doesn't look like this report was ever addressed, and I have this same problem For my case... the target disk I *want* to select has enough free space (7.5TB out of 8TB) to move the entire usershare that I've selected (~6.2TB), but that disk does not show in the available targets. Often, there are zero options for selecting the target. Other times, unBalance offers me target disks that have <1TB free (for this 6+TB transfer) Docker-safe new permissions has been recently run; all dockers are stopped Any idea what's going on here or how to resolve? opentoe
Quick question. Sine this utility has been so great how would you set it up to balance all your drives pretty much as equal as it can? Quote Link to comment
kithme
Hi, I use unblance GATHER to move the data. but I get double capacity, even can not find where are them. My disk useage from 33.6% up to 49.7% Quote Link to comment
Boosted2.3L
Hello team, I cannot get unbalance to go past the "choose target drive" when selecting the "scatter" option, nor can I get logs to populate. The icon in the to right hand side of the page keeps "looping" endlessly. I have attempted the following with no solution, any help would be appreciated: Uninstall unbalance, reboot, reinstall Docker Safe New Perms Yes I disabled docker/VMs Quote Link to comment
veglasagna
I am unable to use this app, as soon as I click open the Web GUI, I get this certificate error. Chrome does not allow me to continue, nor does Safari. I used my router to give my nas a named static ip, shown as dellnas in the error. Quote Link to comment
CaptainTivo
It's because the developer chose to use https and did not provide a valid certificate for authentication. Simply click "Advanced" and then "Proceed to Tower (or whatever your servers name is )" You can safely ignore the warnings in this case (dont do it on the open internet, though) Quote Link to comment
veglasagna
Sorry, I should have mentioned that it still does not work even when you click advanced (in Chrome 101.0.4951.64). The screen shot is from Chrome. I just double-checked with other browsers, and Safari 15.4 & Firefox 100.0 allowed the override. Ok, so at least I can use the app! If the developer has a chance to see this post, be aware that Chrome is blocking that work-around. Edited May 15, 2022 by veglasagna Quote Link to comment
-=Striker=-
So I've run Unbalance on four 2TB drives that I want to remove from my array and it's moved all of the visible data on to the desired 8TB drives, however in the summary screen, there is indication that there is 14 - 24GB left on each of my 2TB drives. What is this data? I can't see it (i've also tried ls -a -R -s from the command line which also returns no results). I'm concerned about what will happen if I remove these drives from my array. Is there some necessary data on there or is it safe to remove them? Quote Link to comment

I was just concerned that there were other files there of some importance that I would lose when pulling the drives and rebuilding. If it's just overheard, then that's fine and there should be no issue. Just seems odd that it isn't the same amount of overhead per drive which is why I was concerned. Quote Link to comment

All of my 2TB drives were installed at the same time. They were all part of my original array and initial foray into Unraid, so I don't think they would be formatted differently. It's probably OK, just looking for some reassurance that i'm not going to FUBAR my whole array somehow and cause myself headaches in the next few days.... Quote Link to comment
jamikest
Hey There! I have seen this question multiple time in this forum, yet it has never been definitively answered in the two years that it keep popping up. unBALANCE is stating: unBALANCE needs exclusive access to disks, so disable mover and/or any dockers that write to disks, before running it. Also note that transfer speed may be affected by disk health. I have disabled dockers and cannot "scatter" a drive that I wish to upgrade. The options are all grayed out (plan, move, copy). There is no option to disable mover. Any ideas how to proceed? Previous (unsolved questions) from this and other forums: https://forums.unraid.net/topic/43651-plug-in-unbalance/page/62/ https://www.reddit.com/r/unRAID/comments/umnwxo/unbalance_not_workingloading/ Quote Link to comment
CaptainTivo
It always worked for me. I just turned off caching on all my shares and shut down my dockers. That last is not necessary if your dockers only use the cache drive but not as a cache, if you know what I mean. The precautions are there so that the mover is not copying files to shares while you are doing the scatter/gather. I always use the "dry-run" option so that I can see the rsync commands that it generates. I have never had it refuse to run. Quote Link to comment
jamikest
I believe I may have solved my previous question: Quote I have disabled dockers and cannot "scatter" a drive that I wish to upgrade. The options are all grayed out (plan, move, copy). I had added another SSD via USB to replace a failing unassigned drive. I had never rebooted the system and the array was working. During this process, I rebooted and the array would not start; this USB SSD had exceeded my license key! I upgraded to an unlimited license and was then able to use unBALANCE to move data. ysu
Hi, I've got a problem; the error message this plugin gives me disappears (webgui) after a few seconds, making it very hard to use the software. Is there any way to keep the error/warning message on the screen, and only close it if - for example - I click a little X in the top-right corner of it? (or a close button, some kind of user interaction) Quote Link to comment
